Dog lovers - What sort of fence do you have?

I am getting a dog this time next year and am sorting the garden out for him. It's a muddy mess atm, so I have brought weed control fabric, and am going to buy gravel to cover it all. I have standard panel fencing which often blows down in the strong winds. I need something to make it stronger, and also higher as it's mostly 3/4ft high, and I don't want the dog escaping. Can anyone reccomend something that won't cost the loads to do? Thanks

A picket fence will let the wind through, so more robust.

posts and chain link. 4'-6' high should do the job depending on the sort of dog you're getting.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to have a german shepherd, grew up with them, so know what to expect. Was thinking chain link would be the way to go, lets the wind through, the fence is 6ft at each end, 4ft in the middle iykwim, trying to think of a way to make the middle bit higher, would probably have to knock something into the fence posts that are already there I think.

I'd say 6' would be better for a GSD, and maybe get it about 8' if possible so you could dig it into the ground about 2' just in case he is a digger! or alternatively you could patio slabs along the length of the fence to prevent digging.

I was hoping the gravel would prevent the digging, but your right digging the fence into the ground would stop him digging under. TBH I am more worried about him jumping the fence, it's amazing how high they can jump when they want too.

MOST DOG RESCUES WOULD RECOMMEND A 6FT FENCE ALL ROUND FOR ANY TYPE OF DOG BECAUSE SOME DOGS ARE JUST GREAT ESCAPE ARTISTS!
I KNEW A LADY WHOS JACK RUSSEL USED TO CLIMB HER 6FT HIGH GARDEN WALL....AND SHE WAS A DOG TRAINER .

My jack russell climbs trees!

Hopefully a GSD will be less looney agile.

We had a problem with him jumping onto the top of our four-foot wall (and then down the eight-foot drop the other side!) so I used an 18-inch trellis fixed on top of the wall. Perhaps that would be a cheap option for raising the shorter parts of your fence.
