I do like rats and all small rodents BUT we already have 3 cats and a large dog. One of the cats is particularly murderous and think it would try to eat anyhing smaller than itself. so please stop me giving in and indulging DD. I need horror stories of a non biting, alternative?

that should be OR a non bilting alternative!

Don't do it. Our cats got ALL our rodents (pet and otherwise) even though in some cases it took MONTHS of persistence.
