Yes, cats' and dogs' livers can't process the paracetamol. Or aspirin. I think they can have lidocain, though, can't remember what my cat had last time.

kaa0901 · 14/02/2008 22:33

but she can have aspirin 75mg (our vet told us to give it to our dog when she was neutered)

CountessDracula · 14/02/2008 22:36

oh ok
she is 45kg - may need more or less depending on the size of your dog I guess

I was shocked when I asked the vet about this.
The dogs's anti-inflammatory tablets are quite expensive so i asked about nurofen and he said it would kill her .

CountessDracula · 14/02/2008 22:38

Thanks so much
I have found a chart that says she can have 480 mg

Ye gods! Hope she feels better soon, poor love. Ripley sends a consoling lick

CountessDracula · 14/02/2008 22:40

ahh thanks Ripley [woof]

This is one of the arguments used by anti - vivisectionists. If penicillin had been tested on cats it would never have made it to becoming a medicine as it kills them.

Brangelina · 14/02/2008 23:02

Oh is aspirin only poisonous to cats then? I'm sure we had to buy some expensive analgesic preapration when we ahd our dog because she couldn't have aspirin. Probably a sales ploy by the vet.

JossStick · 14/02/2008 23:06

I'm sure it's poisonous to lots of animals but it's the cats thing that i read about.

CountryGirl2007 · 14/02/2008 23:07

phew, lucky that you looked it up first. I know somebody that gave her nieces medicine to her cat and the cat was dead within 2 days.

I have had dogs for 16 years and never once contemplated giving them human painkillers. However have given my old dog human "fusimide" as the ingrdients on the paqcket were identical the the doggie version. Shocked about the fact this can kill a dog! Very useful info.
