Need to write a letter to my dog's breeder NEED HELP

Please help me construct a letter to my dog's breeder.

I have a dog that I bought privately from a breeder. The dog is 18 months old. For various reasons beyond our control, we need to re-home her. It was never our intention to give her up. Of course when we got her we expected to have her forever but life changes have meant that keeping her is not workable. We have tried 😥 but she would be much better off in a new home.

Before rehoming her, we feel that we should contact the breeder and explain the circumstances to them out of courtesy. However I don't how to say it! I suffer from anxiety and everytime I pick up the phone to do it, I panic and hang up.

I've decided to write a letter/email first as I might be able to explain it better. I'm afraid she will hate me and judge me. Can you help me write a kind letter explaining that we intend to re-home the dog and wanted to let them know in advance? After all they might want her back and rehome her themselves.

Thank you

I’d stick to the facts.

Something like
Unfortunately, X and Y have happened and sadly, we are not in position to keep ddog.
We wanted to let you know about it so you can decide wether you would like to have ddog back/rehome ddog yourself or let us rehome ddog. <adjust according to the TC>
It was a really hard choice to make and we are heartbroken about it but cannot find a way to make it work for ddog. It wouldn’t be fair on him and he deserves to have a good life with people who will be able to give him the life he deserves.

If you have been in contact and you believe the breeder will be surprised, I’m assuming this is something you can’t control. It’s crap but I’d hope the breeder would understand.

This really says it all for breeder. Do give reasons why you can no longer keep dog though.

Just read your update. Well done OP. It must be hard for you right now.

@mumtokids I'm sorry hear about your AI disease 🌷

I'm so sorry you had to let your dog go, but it's one (big) less stress for you. It's hard enough to organise things for the kids when you're suddenly in hospital, but a dog as well, it's too much stress.

it's lovely your original breeder has been able & willing to have her back. Is she planning on keeping her or finding her a new home? Have you asked if you can get updates & photos or do you think a clean beak is best for you?

I'm crying thinking about you tonight. Doing the right thing can hurt so much, but she's with her original family with comforting smells & lots of ❤️

It's many reasons. I have been diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease. And my youngest daughter has been diagnosed with Autism. I had to give up my job. I am constantly in and out of hospital and can be bed-ridden for days. I never expected any of this. But I have to accept that this is my life now and it's unfair to her. We really have tried everything to make it work.

This is very sad. You shouldn't feel embarrassed or guilty in any way. I'm sure the breeder will understand. Flowers

Sorry, I hadn't read the thread. I'm so glad the breeder was helpful.

Oh bless you @WinterMusings xx The handover was beautiful. I think the breeder will try to rehome her but not rush. And yes she will keep us contacted and give us pupdates.

@mumtokids

i woke up thinking about you this morning. It's the first time in a long time I've done that. I used to when MN was much smaller & had FAR fewer trolls.

Its great that the handover was so good. It was the very best outcome for a shitty situation!

I'm glad you're getting pupdates. Im
sure anyone they consider lovely enough to adopt her will be happy to continue doing it.

Best Wishes for being as 'well' as you can
possibly be 🌷💕

We’ve always bought pedigree dogs from very reputable breeders all have a contract stating they’ll take the dog back and all have said it’s a no judgement policy. Breeders unlike many on MN are realists peoples lives change for all sorts of reasons and sadly some won’t be able to keep their dogs, good breeders understand this and will happily take them back and also usually find them decent homes.
