Chihuahua in labour - and I am pacing about like an expectant father

Just heard some squeaking from the corner of the room and there's mum cleaning one tiny puppy. She's cleaned it up really well but although its squeaking she hasn't let it near her nipples, she's curled up in a ball now. Is this normal? How long before I should worry? Am trying to let nature take its course but what if she doesn't let it feed? Is it ok to help her?
How long should there be between puppies?

Should I give her fresh food and water or should I just leave her alone. She hasn't been fed yet this morning.

leave her alone i would let nature take its course and if you're still concerned, phone a local vet (some have sunday hours, an answering service, etc.) there could be hours between puppies.

Thanks morninggirl that is what I thought but needed a bit of reasurrance.

no worries
i used to work for a vet, it's ok
i hope it all goes well. keep us updated!!!

If she is still giving birth she won't allow the puppy near to her. I remember hearing puppies's squeaking in the early hours and when I checked her I found 3 puppies squaking around the floor, she was cleaning them but keeping her distances. I left her to it, and when I came back in the morning she was happily feeding 5 puppies.

Thanks for your messages. Its reasuring to your experience memysonandI. I am quite a worrier, was worried she wouldn't be able to deiver them herself now worrying about feeding, don't think I'll relax until they are running around the house destroying it.

My youngest chihuahua was only one and half ounces when born!

MeMySonAndI · 03/02/2008 16:23

Hi Wendy

moodywren · 03/02/2008 19:08

I don't think we'll be getting any more now, so we have two gorgeous puppies. They are both quite dark, one is black with a white belly, the other is a bit lighter with a black stripe down its back, which surprises me as mum and dad are both tan.

Mum is doing realy well feeding and leaning them, but sje is really tired.

Will take some photos in the next few days but she's not happy with me getting too close.

I just hope they continue to be healthy as I know chihuahuas can be harder to breed than other dogs (I guess thats why they are so expensive)

Thanks to all of you for your interest and helpful posts.
