I'm baby sitting my SILs dachshund puppy and I can't help thinking it would just be amazing to get one:( but I have a 2 year old and a 10 month old, it would definitely be a bad idea surely? He's been so calm today though and the kids have been fine with him, he loves the garden(he doesn't have one at home) and he's really settling my anxiety tonight.
It would be really expensive as well, wouldn't it?
Ughhh he's just so cute I want to keep him

Imo one would certainly get trampled in in your home. Possibly why we didn't get one.

Reallyreallyborednow · 21/04/2022 19:38

25% get IVDD (slipped disc), on top of that they are more prone to accidental and other back injuries.

you will need a very good insurance policy and/or significant savings if (when) they do get back issues.

travellingturtle · 21/04/2022 19:38

Expensive, Dachshunds are known to be barky. Are you ready for toilet training? Do you have time to walk it regularly? Can you enjoy your SIL's more regularly without getting your own?

Maybe you can negotiate a maximum-snuggles-minimum-responsibility situation before tying yourself into a decade of dog ownership?

Hellocatshome · 21/04/2022 19:40

Just be happy puppy sitting for now and get one when the kids are older, they are not a great breed for kids not because of their behaviour but they can be accidentally hurt quite easily.

ImJustNotMeAnymore · 21/04/2022 19:42

I can't because a friend just had dachshund puppies and hubby said no because apparently we have enough dogs already 🙂

whatuser · 21/04/2022 19:45

All very good points thank you guys. You just get drawn in by the long ears and gorgeous eyes!

Yes the insurance and possible vet bills wouldn't be ideal, we do have savings but we don't own our house so they are reserved for that.

Hopefully he's badly behaved tomorrow and I want to send him back 😂

Sounds good to me, they babysit our babies a lot so we could swap each time

Your kids are too little for a delicate small dog. Just content yourself with playing with hers. Also, some of them are barky and badly behaved.

LoveSpringDaffs · 21/04/2022 19:49

you definitely definitely don't want one of these...

They are so pretty, we have a giant, biting, chewing, console destroying Labrador who needs 2 hours of walks a day and drives me nuts. Don't get a Labrador.

Badger1970 · 21/04/2022 19:57

A neighbour has got one, and it's the worst dog in the village for its barking. YAP YAP YAP you always know when someone has walked past their house.

It starts at 7am and goes on til dusk.

whatuser · 21/04/2022 20:00

@LoveSpringDaffs tell me what he/she is!! How adorable

This.
Dachshunds are really cute, but like a lot of pedigree dogs they are now predisposed to health problems, better to have a crossbreed or mongrel.

Trying to
Post a pic but it's not letting me!

My son has one , so barky and the times I have tripped up over it 😫

Dancer47 · 21/04/2022 20:08

They have spinal problems as they age for very obvious reasons, so you had better have plenty of money for the vet, or a little trolley made for the back legs.

TheFlis12345 · 21/04/2022 20:09

I was coming here to say GET ONE but having read your post, please don’t with two such young kids. They are a very demanding, stubborn breed who can be hard to toilet and sleep train. Ours wasn’t thankfully but despite being gently and consistently exposed to them at a young age, he really doesn’t like small children and I have heard the same from others with sausages.

SkiingIsHeaven · 21/04/2022 20:10

They are totally untrainable. Don't do it.

Don't get a border terrier either. Mine mocks me everyday.

Really? Perhaps he's an exception to the rule as he never barks, he sleeps all night in his crate, is toilet trained and responds well to his name and 'no'. Think SIL has had the luck of the draw with this one! I hope he doesn't get the back problems bless him

Perhaps I'll get one to replace the kids when they've flown the nest

The potential for back problems would put me off. Would hate to see the cute little things in pain. I like something hardier.

GADDay · 21/04/2022 20:21

Please don't buy a dachshund. They are predisposed to awful spinal issues. They are also not great family pets, often very barky/anxious.

DesidaCrick · 21/04/2022 20:22

Pedigree health problems can be awful. 😥A cross with another breed would be harder to find but a good option for the future when your kids are older.

Overitallnow · 21/04/2022 20:25

Don't be mad! Any dog with kids your age is a nightmare. You'll have to drag them out every time the dog needs a walk. I speak from experience!
