I'm baby sitting my SILs dachshund puppy and I can't help thinking it would just be amazing to get one:( but I have a 2 year old and a 10 month old, it would definitely be a bad idea surely? He's been so calm today though and the kids have been fine with him, he loves the garden(he doesn't have one at home) and he's really settling my anxiety tonight.
It would be really expensive as well, wouldn't it?
Ughhh he's just so cute I want to keep him

They can’t scratch behind their own ears.

That makes me so sad. DDog loves a good scratch. #TeamMongrel

Although the puppy dachshund at the park is so cute I could eat him. In a bun. Which he would fit in. 🌭

@Reallyreallyborednow

25% get IVDD (slipped disc), on top of that they are more prone to accidental and other back injuries.

you will need a very good insurance policy and/or significant savings if (when) they do get back issues.

This puts me off the breed I'm afraid . I also think they are a fad breed a bit like pugs a few years ago and then / now frenchie s

I've never met a daschund that doesn't bark incessantly.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 22/04/2022 08:21

They’re so tiny that the outside world is probably terrifying to them a lot of the time.

They’ve been selectively bred to have an unnaturally long spine. You’re never going to know how much pain they’re in.

I don’t know why anyone would choose to support the continuation of breeding deliberately deformed animals.

I wouldn’t go for any type of dog that waddles along on stumpy legs…no dachshund or pug or frenchie for me. This is because I want a dog that can regularly handle long distances on rough terrain to fit in with my pastimes. I want a medium Heinz 57 that is highly trainable…a lurcher or a collie cross or whatever. No small dog yip yip bloody yip either thanks.
Also a lot of these fanciful breeds aren’t actually that cute to my mind. They’re often snotty and drooly and raspy with crap crusting their eyes and muzzle. Bleugh. Sorry.

A nice, neat, clever, springy mongrel dog for me please.

A friend has a rescue mini Dachshund puppy from Dogs Trust - they get loads of Dachshunds through their work with puppy smuggling. Easily one of the top 5 breeds that are smuggled into this country for the pet trade, with no consideration for their long term health :( the ones that don't get caught at the border, are going to be sold online with fake mums or with fake paperwork. Sigh.

We have both. A large hairy bouncy slobbery manic but totally gorges black lab and a miniature sausage dog. They are best friends. The lab wraps himself around the sausage and they sleep that way. I run with both of them which they both love and they get the same amount of exercise, about 40 minutes a day.

Sorry can't dissuade you op. All pp comments are true but I wouldn't be without my girl.

not all small dogs are yippy. Mine was a stealth puppy, never known a dog so quiet. Eventually had to train him to bark at the door, alert to people approaching etc, which he now does brilliantly.

he’s pretty good on long walks too, although also perfectly happy spending all day hunting mice with the cat.

lots of small dogs behave badly because they don’t have basic training, because they can be physically managed rather than expecting them to obey commands.

I have a rescue dachshund/Jack Russell mongrel.

Toilet training was/is awful. She's nearly there. She's 3. Nearly. There. Three. Years.

Being a cross she has longer legs than a pedigree but her back ones are amazing for running but fucking useless for anything else for some reason so I spend a lot of time scritching her ears. I like that though.

She is ball obsessed. And I do mean obsessed.

She's not as barky as some but she is reactive to people walking past the house etc.

She is not snappy and gets on fine with smaller members of the family,

I meant to say- she lives with 2 cats too and no issues at alll- she loves to boop them. She has a very low prey drive compared to others of her 'breed'

We have a pug and he's (touch wood) very healthy. We keep him slim and fit and he can race any hound (has done just yesterday). He walks for hours with us and snores a lot less than our miniature poodle used to. He's an amazing dog, but I get that we may have just been extremely lucky. He also has slightly longer legs than your average waddling pug, but that might be due to the fact that he's slim. I think a lot of the pug's issues come from being often extremely overweight.
