I'm baby sitting my SILs dachshund puppy and I can't help thinking it would just be amazing to get one:( but I have a 2 year old and a 10 month old, it would definitely be a bad idea surely? He's been so calm today though and the kids have been fine with him, he loves the garden(he doesn't have one at home) and he's really settling my anxiety tonight.
It would be really expensive as well, wouldn't it?
Ughhh he's just so cute I want to keep him

Dachshunds were bred to go down badger holes and dig the badgers out. So they have big sharp claws and they like to dig. They will wreck your garden and also your furniture. They also have a strong prey drive and can be quite aggressive and barky. Not a dog I would recommend for children, or for anyone who likes their home and garden to look nice.

You don’t want one of these, little terrors.

@Filthycop ohhh so sweet. But my cocker spaniel is the same. Sets off the other dogs in neighbourhood and then they all start barking in chorus. I am very tempted to trade my dog in for one 😉 a friend has one and says she has to let it out to go to the toilet every night about 2am 😬

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 21/04/2022 21:45

They can’t scratch behind their own ears.

As someone who has congenital spinal issues & having to take fistfuls of opiates a day for basic relief, purposefully breeding a dog with a deformed spine for looks (not just dachshunds either) is bloody cruel.

All the sausages I’ve met have been nice enough but, to a fault, all have spinal issues, are neurotic, yappy & are never well toilet trained. We thought about getting a rough coated Teckel sausage a few years ago, but glad we have our giant mongrel doods. Sure, you can’t pick my lads up (at way over 50kg each) but heck, at least they can scratch their own ears.

ivfbabymomma1 · 21/04/2022 21:50

I'm sorry I can't put you off 😂😂 I have 3 chihuahuas which I had way before my son was born and now he's 2 they are all the best of friends, they are very gentle with each other and I have no issue. But the dogs were here first and so my son has learn from day 1 when to leave them alone and when to approach them etc which might be the vital difference....

FrecklesMalone · 21/04/2022 21:53

Please please please don't. You will be encouraging more breeding of an over breed dog that has a high chance of having painful and expensive spinal problems.

FourChimneys · 21/04/2022 22:01

As a teenager I lived two doors away from a dachshund, the barkiest dog I have ever come across. Yap yap yap, every time anything moved. The neighbours in between moved away, they couldn't stand it.

I'm not a dog lover but hate to think of them being over bred to the point of pain just to satisfy a human aesthetic or for hunting.

powershowerforanhour · 21/04/2022 22:02

Intentionally bred to be chondrodysplastic , i.e. disabled. 25% lifetime risk of IVDD is qualzucht IMO.

Changechangychange · 21/04/2022 22:03

Our neighbours had two. They barked non-stop, day and night, at everything. They have a baby now (and a pair of greyhounds, randomly) and it is much quieter.

Wagsandclaws · 21/04/2022 22:03

My daughter has 4, 3 standards 1 mini. The standards have less health problems and are not as overbred as the minis. Her mini is a rescue.

The minis can get ivdd but this is something that the standards don't carry usually.

If you want a sausage get a standard - the longhaired ones are utterly gorgeous.

pictish · 21/04/2022 22:06

No don’t get one. They have silly short legs and go yip yip yip all day.

CockingASnook · 21/04/2022 22:07

Dachshunds are quite nippy and short-tempered as far as I know. Definitely not a first choice of breed with young children.

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 21/04/2022 22:11

They can’t scratch behind their own ears.

Never thought of that! Maybe that's why they yap so much, they're angry at not being able to have a good old scritch. Sad

Unsure33 · 21/04/2022 22:13

If you do , get a standard long haired . I dog sit one and he is much sturdier and quieter and absolutely gorgeous temperament .

Ccharlotte · 21/04/2022 22:17

Aw, definitely offer to dog sit regularly and get the best of both worlds.

Beamur · 21/04/2022 22:20

Enjoy your SIL dog, he sounds lovely. Chances are you wouldn't get one as easy! I think your kids are too young for taking on any puppy right now. Be a champion dog sitter until they're a bit older.

Mariposista · 21/04/2022 22:22

awwww cute little sausage dog! They do bark a lot - my neighbour's sausage dog found his lungs at 4 months, but he has such a cute, indignant little face that he is instantly forgiven haha and he bosses my labrador about

AwkwardPaws27 · 21/04/2022 22:22

I really like the rough coat teckels but minis are far too delicate, especially with young children.
The IVDD risk is just too high for me to consider them. It's not just the cost or the pain - many survivors are left with a degree of incontinence and frankly I just wouldn't want that (& I say that as someone who has just nursed a dog through months of high dose steroids treatment, where he was peeing every hour or so).

Oh, & the barking. There's a pair a few doors down who spend the whole day yelling at anyone or anything that dares move.

JudyGemstone · 21/04/2022 22:24

My friends new girlfriend has one, my friend describes it as ‘pompous’.
Its also snappy and has nipped my friends kids several times.

Another friend had a mini wire haired one, it wasn’t toilet trained despite her being a v experienced dog owner, and shat everywhere.

So based on that sample of 2, I wouldn’t get one. I only really like proper big dogs anyway.

Cuck00soup · 21/04/2022 22:27

Try living next door to a pair of them. They are yapping bastards.

I love dogs. Proper ones at least.

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 21/04/2022 22:54

Our dachshund was amazing, but we had to have him put to sleep at 5 years old because of a ruptured disc in his spine (IVDD). The process we went through to try to save him was hell for all of us.
They are a totally inappropriate breed to have around young children due to their sensitive backs.

LoveSpringDaffs · 22/04/2022 06:19

whatuser · 21/04/2022 20:00

@LoveSpringDaffs tell me what he/she is!! How adorable

@whatuser

Sadly he's not mine, but he's a wire haired Dasch!

Cervinia · 22/04/2022 06:26

You said you don’t own your own house yet.

is your landlord OK with pets, especially puppies that might chew their fireplace or piss on their carpets?

i love animals, had cats all my life, they are treated as babies, but even they got hardly
any attention for a few years when I had young children. Fortunately as cats they didn’t much care. Dogs are not independent. they need time, money and attention to be trained properly.

LesleysChestnutBob · 22/04/2022 06:34

One of my neighbours has one - it’s a barky stubborn little gobshite who doesn’t listen to any of its family when they tell it to come in because they gave up on training it. It just stands in the garden barking its head off for no reason. It’s not even cute either
