I got 2 mini lops yesterday, before I got them I ordered a hutch, and for now they hop around the living room and sleep in a dog cage at night.

BUT Im now thinking a hutch is going to look really stupid in my living room (original plan was for them to go near the inside of the back door, but I want them in the living room now)

The dog cage is too small to be a permenant home, so Im wondering what to do?

Bigger dog cage, put up with a hutch in the living room, baby playpen?

Or splash oyut on one of these here, which I think would be best (but have £70 hutch on the way)

mine has this - ferplast

KittyletteItBe · 25/11/2007 12:38

Oh thats good, so the side fully opens so they can hop in and out?

Do you use sawdust and hay?

Only im going to try and littertrain so i just have hay in a bowl and a piece or carpet in the hutch, with the littertray in the corner so i just clean that out daily. The sawdust & hay is driving me mad!

yes the front opens, so she can easily jump in or out. she also has a tray that fits into the corner where she does her business.

i use newspaper, sawdust then hay. it does go everywhere

we have the ferplast one too.its really good as you can leave side open so they have access in and out.we put a box in there so she can have some privacy if she likes.

Hello sorry to barge in! I LOVE rabbits! Am trying to convince dh its a good pet to have. So I knew they could be litter trained but didn't know you could have carpet in their hutch instead of messy stuff cos that puts me off. The hay in the bowl is that for eating??
So far have your bunnies chewed any of your carpets or furniture?? Or wires?!!

BroccoliSpears · 25/11/2007 14:02

We had house rabbits. I loved them to bits but my goodness they were destructive. Chewed through wires, remote controls, books, carpet, wallpaper, shoes, bags, everything!

It is so important for them to get their exercise though, so I think it's best for them to be allowed to roam free for hours a day - they're so sociable and curious and funny. It breaks my heart to think of bunnies stuck in hutches at the bottom of the garden.

moljam · 25/11/2007 20:09

manuka they chew everything!
my friend had a daygoo(spelling is bad i know) that got electricuted the other day so am being extra careful checking wires etc.

no sadly died

manuka · 28/11/2007 14:33

Oh that's awful! What a horrible way to go the poor thing.

southeastastra · 28/11/2007 14:35

degu

you can get special wire protectors (jml i think)

rebelmum1 · 28/11/2007 14:38

yeah I wouldn't have one because of the chewing thing, I had a chinchilla that got behind my fridge and chewed through the wire, exploded and set the fridge on fire. I examined all my wires and it was a wonder that there hadn't been a fire sooner.

rebelmum1 · 28/11/2007 14:40

chewed through wire protectors too.

southeastastra · 28/11/2007 14:40

you let a chinchilla have free run of your house?

rebelmum1 · 28/11/2007 14:53

no it escaped from the cage.

rebelmum1 · 28/11/2007 14:54

just let it out for the odd run but it scarpered and had a good chew and i'd have to run around catching it.

phraedd · 28/11/2007 16:17

this is what we have

our baby german lop seems happy with it.

He too eats everything he can find.

He loves my cat though....they lay under the table together and he gives the cat "kisses". Not sure if the cat is impressed though

I think I'll not get a rabbit now after reading all your posts! Dh would kill it if it chewed our house to bits! They're so cute though aren't they?
Think we'll get a dog instead. Knowing our luck it'l chew everything!
