Our delightful 10 year old cat came in last night in a collar which was a surprise and I wonder if someone else is trying to claim him?

He has never worn a collar before so I was impressed that they were able to get it on him. He generally doesnt go out of the house much but I have noticed he has been out a bit more than normal recently but I put this down to the sun. He is chipped but its to a former address but telephone number is still active

Does he have another family who want to claim him or is it someone having a bit of fun? Is there anything we can do?

Could you attach something to the collar or put a paper collar on him with your details so the other person knows he is your cat

You update the chip details and I'd add your details to this new collar.

You can get engraved tags off Amazon for not much and quickly - www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0074JHI3W?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Sounds like he’s been having his cake and eating it too. Can you keep him inside for a couple of days without distressing him? Otherwise, a note on the collar should do the trick.

MyOtherProfile · 01/07/2021 13:42

Definitely update the chip.
I would also post on the local Facebook group if you have one just to say thanks whoever is looking out for this cat but he is ours.

Update the details on his chip for a start. Someone may have have checked it and think he's lost if the old address is far away.

Yep, I'd be keeping him in a few days of that won't distress him too much. I'd also replace the collar with one with your details and update the microchip.

Does it have a bell?
Has he been on a killing spree?

Timpson do these too, if you have one near you

As a pp says, I’d attach a note to the collar if you can. We had similar with a childhood cat and I remember messages being exchanged via collar!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 01/07/2021 13:55

Yes, update his chip and add a note to collar to say that he belongs to a family already.

DragonDoor · 01/07/2021 13:59

Someone is definitely trying to make him their own pet!

Perhaps they have put the collar on to see what happens- if it’s taken off an replaced it will be clear he to them he has an owner.

Honestly, some people! Cats are not lost or abandoned just because they are out and about!

Update his chip and add an ID tag to his collar. I would also put a post on the local media page to make it clear he already has a home with you.
