Royal Python has escaped!

Belvedeer · 04/01/2021 10:00

My daughter’s royal python escaped on New Year’s Eve and is still missing. I followed tips online to search room by room and then sealing the door off if she’s not in there but can’t find her anywhere! I’ve literally ransacked the place, every piece of clothing has been removed and checked even the hanging clothes, every drawer has been removed, I even pulled the fridge freezer out and took the plinths off in the kitchen! We’ve left her viv door open with a mouse inside, tried leaving a hot water bottle with hide on the top next to a mouse at night but still no sign. Does anyone have any other tips of what we can do? I have a distraught 8 year old on my hands!

I keep checking this thread hopeful for an update. Never have I wanted a lost pet to be returned to its owner more!

I don't agree with people keeping wild Creatures as Pets !

Its Animal Cruelty !

Of Course The Snake has escaped its his Natural instinct Bid for Freedom for Heavens Sake !

Have you checked the loft? Nice and warm with lots of soft insulation to curl up in.

Belvedeer · 24/01/2021 09:11

Still no sign 🥲. Will definitely let you know if/when she turns up!

Oh no Sad I had my hopes up.

I’m rather curious as to why people have pet snakes. Surely these snakes won’t always remain so tiny? What then? This reminds me of the teacup pig fad where people promptly got rid of their pigs when they started growing.

I remember reading a National Geographic article a good few years back about someone being strangled by a snake that escaped from a pet store. The fact that this was a snake that escaped from a pet store stayed with me for years because I always assumed, quite mistakenly, that snakes from pet stores are supposed to be safer.

:(

Hopefully she's found somewhere warm inside the house to cwtch up, and she'll reappear as soon as she gets peckish. And hopefully this is before summer comes and she can realistically go further without getting cold

Our snake is a full grown adult. We knew exactly how big she'd get - she wasn't sold as a miniature snake. They are easier to handle when bigger, less delicate and also calmer and slower.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/01/2021 17:59

Dd's snake won't end up huge she chose a smaller type.

Bobkitten · 24/01/2021 18:09

So sorry there’s no sign of her yet. I have my fingers crossed for you.

@ExitChasedByABear, not all snakes grow to a very large size. Royal Pythons like the OP’s grow to around 3-5ft. That’s not especially big and can easily be kept at home. No risk of being strangled by one of those; in the extremely unlikely event they did try to wrap around your neck (the majority of Royal Pythons wouldn’t dream of wasting energy on this), they could be easily unhooked.

MabelMoo23 · 24/01/2021 20:44

I got really hopeful then she’d been found

I mean I can’t bear snakes but she’s a beloved family pet who you must miss

Rules in this house:

Nothing venomous
Nothing poisonous
Nothing (big and) constricting
Nothing too big (corn snakes are a perfectly manageable size full-grown)
Nothing that will outlive me because when an animal enters the house we commit to looking after it for life. Can't do that if I'm dead.

There are 'starter' snakes. Don't get an anaconda, taipan or reticulated python. Ever, but certainly not as a newb.

ThePawtriarchy · 24/01/2021 21:06

I’m guessing you have but have you checked inside the underneath of the sofa. A friend’s snake was found there once.

SionnachRua · 24/01/2021 21:45

Poor thing, hope she turns up soon!

HighTime33 · 24/01/2021 21:57

Lost a baby snake years ago and followed the instructions at the end if this thread - caught it within 24 hours of setting the trap. Good luck!

Hello I'm not sure if you found your snake as of yet but I thought I would share my own experience with you as I am a snake breeder and experience this every other week.

My best advice would be to isolate rooms, turn of the heating and have one are ideally the vivarium as the only source of heat. Turn of the lights as they are mainly active at night and wait an hour or so...

The best thing to do in this situation is not to panic, ball pythons are not dangerous and they are no way near big enough to harm or kill a human or child. I say not to panic but everytime of on my snakes escapes it's like my heart falls out of my chest.

If anyone has any snakes issues please don't hesitate to contact me and I'll help as best as I can :)

Belvedeer · 27/01/2021 19:18

Bad news I’m afraid, there’s been a slight smell upstairs for the past few days which had gotten really potent today, turns out she was under the toilet. We’ve just managed to lift it and get her out, RIP Pastel the snake 🥲

Oh, I'm sorry.

That's just a shame. Hope your kids are ok. We take these wee things into their hearts.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/01/2021 21:00

I'm so sorry OP.

I know how much my DD loves her animals (massively more than she loves us) and she would be devastated.

Belvedeer · 27/01/2021 23:05

Just want to say thank you for all your lovely and helpful comments, DD is devastated and so am I after tugging Pastel’s dead body from under the toilet, definitely not something I’ll forget, not good times 🥲. I
