Cat tail injury, waiting vet but feeling worried

I’m obviously taking him to the vet, and I know the worst case scenario is amputation. I’m just wondering if anyone else has had a cat with a tail injury that did heal? The video appointment was good but she only gave us worst case scenario. He got hit by a car, no obvious injuries and we can pick him up etc He’s going to the toilet fine, eating, walking, jumping up and down and catching frogs! A couple of days he spent crying out when he tried to sit down on his bottom. He is a long haired cat with a huge fluffy tail, part Maine Coon, so he usually flicks it and has it upright. It’s just hanging down now although he does lift it a bit and pulls away when I squeeze the end as vet instructed. I guess I just don’t want to worry about amputation all night and hoping there might be a chance he’s able to keep it. The vets are so busy so she didn’t have long to chat. He’s such a lovely cat and he loves to flick that tail.

Yes we are terribly sad. Our old vet missed this a few months ago despite symptoms so I’m really heartbroken he has suffered in pain. He will at least get steroids. We have the option of chemo but not sure about it. I might start a new thread on that. He’s such a lovely cat, the sweetest kindest little guy who has been like a therapy cat to our autistic DD. Heartbreaking
