Worst Mum in the world - burnt my cat - crying my eyes out

Oh guys 😭😭😭😭

I have two Siamese cats which are my life - I adore them so much.

I have a 2 week old baby (first time mum) who has been ill since birth with various problems - first he wouldn't eat, then had blood in his sick now has a really bad cold so is struggling to breathe.

Day before yesterday I boiled some water and put it in a bowl on the window sill in the kitchen to cool so I could clean baby's eyes as they are sticky - cats are not allowed in kitchen and the door is always shut. I was washing the dishes and in comes the one cat and jumps up onto the window sill and stands in the boiling water - he knocks the bowl over and runs away. I followed him with a cool cloth and checked his feet and they seemed fine. He didn't cry or fuss and was begging for treats straight away.

I've noticed tonight he is burnt super bad on the inside of his leg. I'm crying my eyes out 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I didn't even realise and now I feel so bad I am the worst person in the world.

I will take him to the vets tomorrow but I could cry and cry and cry.

Everything seems against me 😥

Cats are very good at hiding pain so no wonder you didn’t realise. You did everything you could. Don’t be hard on yourself. Dcat will be fine

Don't worry about it. It'll heal. My cat jumped on the hob just after it had been used a few years ago and burnt two of his paw pads pretty badly. Both healed absolutely fine. Although trying to keep a bandage on a cat's paw is not easy! He also milked it for weeks, running around and up and down his scratching post quite happily but then dangling his paw pathetically when sitting down.

Awww, poor kitty and poor you. What a nasty accident. Off to the vets tomorrow and get him seen to.

I don’t want to brush that off but I’m also a little worried about you. Having a new baby makes you very vulnerable and emotional, not to mention all the hormones and the tiredness! Be gentle with yourself. Accidents happen and fortunately it wasn’t worse. My cat once had serious burns on her back (the vet thought someone had dumped boiling water on her), the poor mite, but she made a full recovery and all her fur grew back. They’re tough little creatures like that.

Oh veering off topic slightly, are you breastfeeding? If so, believe it or not breast milk is great for baby eye infections.

My cat jumped on our gas hob while it was lit, she streaked up the stairs on fire, scared me half to death. She had frizzled fur on her chest, all her whiskers went into tight curls, and she had a burn on her nose. She was absolutely fine though, it all healed up even though it looked awful. Accidents happen.

Poor little love. He'll be ok, but certainly worth seeing the vet tomorrow. He might need some pain killers. Do you have any spare might be worth giving him a drop.

I keep some spare in the fridge for my kitty just incase something happens. Probably not supposed to, I guess.

And don't feel terrible it was just an accident.

Ha, our half-Siamese did the same. For months after she was two-tone with one side the usual lovely bluey-grey colour and the other side a burnt looking auburn.

Don't worry OP, I'm sure your cat will be fine. He'll probably be sore for a while but soon on the road to recovery.

Hopefully the vets say it's not as bad as I think tomorrow and he's ok.
Even stressing about him going to the vets - the baby is ill so I don't want to take him out in the cold, but I don't want to leave him to go to the vets and I also don't want my cat to have to go without me either... 😥 god I hate hormones!!!!!!!

You're not terrible, because you care - it's a simple accident that could happen to anyone. Take him to the vet in the morning and get it dressed, and within a few weeks he'll have forgotten all about it.

You'll find the same with DS as he gets older - shit happens, however hard you try and stop it. But it's how you react that matters - if you fuss them, and do everything you can to make it better, they'll never hold it against you.

Bet he'll still sleep on your bed tonight if you let him!

Keep an eye on it for a few days, and if it's blistered or blisters, then take to vets, otherwise... Keep her in for a few days (so she doesn't get anything in it) and if necessary, rub some nappy cream it to keep it clean, and also acts as antiseptic esp sudacream (other makes avail).

Don't get guilted into too many extra treats... They will play you!

In regard to sticky eyes, cold BLACK tea is very good and better than boiled water.

Don't cry! He will be absolutely fine and probably not even need the vets, these things happen

He will definitely need to see the vets - book in for tomorrow so appropriate treatment can be given. It doesn’t matter that it was an accident however there is a duty of care to ensure that he receives the treatment he needs!

@Waveymaevey even if everyone said he didn't need the vets I would still take him. They are my babies and I love them so much. I don't care how much it costs or if it's a waste of time taking him I want to make sure he is 100% getting what he needs.

@snowie01 I have one 7 year old called Choccy who is Cinnamon Point - we had him from a rescue centre. He is the best boy in the world. And is the poor burnt baby 😔

And Ollie who is 1 next week, he is Blue point 😊 He's naughty and needs his balls off ASAP lol

My cat once ate the foil from an Easter egg. I tried to the bet that I had killed my practice baby. He is fine but it was a large bill.

Poor you and dcat - I'm sure he will be fine doesn't look too serious, remember his fur will have taken the brunt of it. When my dd was just home from hospital and dh had gone back to work I was pacing round my lounge rocking her when my dcat wandered in and I accidentally kicked her in the face, she went all squinty immediately and I phoned dh hysterical to come home and take her to the vet (he initially thought something was seriously wrong with dd such was my distress) he did and they said I'd scratched her eye with my toenail she needed drops but would be fine. I was literally beside myself with guilt, thinking she was already feeling left out because of dd and now I'd actually physically hurt her. She was of course totally fine as will your cat be, be kind to yourself accidents happen

@iknowimcoming I think my guilt of them feeling pushed out because of the baby is also playing part of this.
They used to both sleep with me every night only pillow but now are locked out of the bedroom as I'm not 100% on them sleeping near the baby just incase they jump into his Moses basket and smother him as they are so cuddly.
We been back and forth the hospital so they have spent a night or two alone (indoor cats and are my shadow so feel super guilty about leaving them)
And because all my attention is on baby.

But I've still physically hurt him so bad! I just want to pick him up and kiss him and tell him how sorry I am!! Poor little babies!

Poor you and cat, it's a stressful time and these things happen, you are doing the right thing and are a good person and mum.

Also what AsdaCentralAisle said - breast milk is truly great for baby eye infections, just squirt some onto a cotton wool pad or ball and dab. Also good for slightly sticky umibilical cords - though obviously get a medical person to check first!

Oh bless you. You checked him out and were ready to give initial treatment. That looks like it was in an awkward place you couldn’t see.
You have seen it now and will get vet treatment as soon as you can. I’m sure it’ll be fine.
If it helps my mum once opened the oven door (yes oven was HOT) and our cat jumped onto the open oven door. And sat there. Mum had to knock her off. She was fine.
Hope all heals well and that LO is better soon.

This is EXACTLY the sort of thing that one of our Siamese would do! They are such a funny breed! He is the most accident prone animal I've ever met!

Don't worry, accidents happen. The vet is a good idea, but I'm sure he'll be right as rain in no time. Be kind to yourself, it's hard work being a new mum, especially with a poorly baby, and your cat will forgive you
