Small/medium dogs that don't shed hair?

Is there any dogs that don't shed or shed very little? I want to get a small to medium sized dog but don't want dog hairs all over my furniture if it can be avoided. I remember as a child we had a dog and the hairs where so bad Confused I was going to get a pug but heard these shed really bad? Tia.

I've two Lhasa's, non shedding and hypoallergenic 👍. They are stubborn little things, and you either get a lazy one or a crazy one (I've one of each) but they're very loyal little dogs.

I have an American cocker spaniel (born in Yorkshire). He doesn’t shed

Yes to mini poodle. I have two and they are fab, definitely the easiest dogs I have owned. Bright and biddable, easy to train, good with animals and children, equally happy to trot round the local park or go for a long country walk. I don't bother with a poodle cut, just have them trimmed the same length all over if I think they look too scruffy. And they don't shed.

Make sure you buy from a line where both parents (or their parents) have been tested for PRA, a genetic eye condition. This is much rarer than it once was simply because breeders have done a good job of testing and excluding dogs which are carriers, but still worth asking.

It massively depends on what personality and energy type you would like because there has been a wide range mentioned here.

Soft coated wheaten terriers match your description of a medium non shedding dog but only if you're willing to groom every day, train them and spend 1-2 hours daily exercising.

Thanks everyone. We all want a dog (partner and 2 children) to love and fuss. We had a cat who sadly passed away a few months ago and we feel so empty and our home feels like its missing something and i feel getting a dog will complete our little family. There is someone home the majority of the day as me and partner work opposite shifts so the dog will never be left alone for long periods, and we are quite active so we would have no trouble fitting in daily walks as we do it anyway and grooming and brushing a dog wont be an issue. Have definitely taken on board the prospect of not knowing what you'd get with a mixed bread dog.

@wheneverythinggoestitsup I've heard Yorkshire terriers are little nippers and can be quite vicious for small dogs? I did suggest a yorkie but was put off by what i was told about them.

We have a mini schnauzer, no shedding but does require daily brushing and groomer visit every six weeks.
She’s very cuddly and affectionate and brilliant with kids. Perfect size for our small house too!

Third vote for a Bichon - although they do need regular hair cuts as they don't shed.
@beer - very cute! We've a rescue one (exc puppy far) for approx 8 yrs and she is also great with children.

Cockapoo !
We are getting an F1 red Cockapoo next week from a local reputable breeder . His name is Chester Bennington 💕 🐶

My best friend breeds and shows Bichon Frises precisely because her DH is allergic to dog fur.
Once you get past the "cloud" cut they are absolutely amazing little dogs.

@Wolfiefan well no, but I didn't realise this was a science lesson. I've been allergic to anything with fur for years. I was brought up with German shepherds, and only realised I was allergic when I left home and no longer had a constant cold. It's well known that Lhasa's are ideal dogs for people with allergies. I did LOTS of research before buying him, and I now have two.

So called Cyprus possdles are also no/low shedding. They are not a proper breed as such as there is too much variation but they are very similar looking to cockerpoos. There are lots available as rescues from organisations based in Cyprus as a lot seem to end up being dumped after a year or 2 of being owned. They have generally gorgeous temperaments and are small/medium sized

@RocketQueen21 I am part of a Lhasa Aspo group on Facebook and there are lots of Chester Benningtons on there. We named ours Chester without realising the connection - it's a cool name 😊

We had a mini Schnauzer growing up and he was cute but so loud and yappy ALL THE TIME. I don't like dogs (sorry) but be aware of how much barking they do.

I agree with schnauzer, ours is a fab family dog, and can I suggest a whippet as they are velcro dogs that love cuddles.

Wow ! That’s really interesting ! Thanks for telling me - good to know there’s lots of Chester Bennington four legged friends out there . My husband and boys are huge fans and were gutted after what happened . Pup was always going to be a Chester 😂

@itisitis
Many people are not allergic to fur but the dander or saliva.

Chihuahua used to think they weren't proper dogs but met a lovely one then ended up with a pair.
They are convinced they are huge dogs that have been shrunk. Awesome personality and don't take a huge amount of exercising.
Wouldn't be without them.

Cavachons. If you join the Facebook group cavachons UK there's a list of approved breeders on there so you're steering free of puppy farms. Ours doesn't shed, great temperament and is great with kids and dogs and generally any living being he comes into contact with
