Are all kittens boring?

We got a 8 week old kitten a week ago. He is so boring, all he does is sleep, eat and hide. He will occasionally have a 10 minute moment where he will play but then he goes off in his little house to sleep for hours. Is this how kittens are or do we just have a boring kitty? I thought kittens where playful and loved a fuss?!

I’ll have him.

HirplesWithHaggis · 27/08/2018 17:47

At nine weeks he will stll be sleeping a lot. Soon, however, he'll be climbing your walls and ripping your curtains. Enjoy the peace while you can.

(He would play more entertainingly with another kitten.)

SecretWitch · 27/08/2018 17:48

Well he’s a baby. 8 weeks is still very young. As long as he is healthy, he will start acting more playful with time. You are aware that cats sleep a great deal of the time, right? stares at three cats all nestled in my bed

Holymolynowayimagreeingwiththa · 27/08/2018 17:49

No kittens are boring. Kittens are probably the best things ever.

PristineCondition · 27/08/2018 17:50

In two weeks time you will be on here asking how to turn his guts into garters because he’s trashed everyhing you hold dear again

DownAtFraggleRock · 27/08/2018 17:51

oh he's so little Sad give him time.

We got a 12 week one and he was so energetic. First thing he did when we got him home was 10 laps of the coffee table.

He's 5 now and pretty much the same Grin

SummerintoAutumn · 27/08/2018 17:51

You should have got two at the same time!
Then they would play together.

Mistoffelees · 27/08/2018 17:52

I don't think they're meant to leave their mothers until they're 8 weeks so I think it's normal he's spending most of his energy on eating and sleeping

LadysFingers · 27/08/2018 17:53

ITA - kittens are magic! However, they are babies - they have a mad half hour or so, then need their sleep!

schooltripwoes · 27/08/2018 17:56

My cat is now 15 months old. He sleeps for 22 hrs a day, washes for 1 hr, eats for about 10 mins and sometimes will go out and sit on the outside step doing nothing much in particular for a few minutes. Occasionally he'll sprint across the garden if he sees his (more active) twin sister chasing something. But he's generally a very boring, lazy puss who has no interest in toys / playing / moving at all!

Siobhan8686 · 27/08/2018 17:58

Thanks all. After reading your comments i dont think ill be taking this quiet time for granted and just enjoy before the wall climbing and curtain scratching starts Grin

@Siobhan8686 - Google Jackson Galaxy for some great ideas.

ScreamingValenta · 27/08/2018 18:02

They spend about 80% of their time sleeping when they're tiny. As long as he is eating, drinking and toileting normally he will be fine. In a few weeks you'll be chasing him up and down your curtains.

Badcat666 · 27/08/2018 18:11

Dear gods, give the poor thing time to settle in!!

Have you had cats or kittens before? They mainly sleep. Its like you are expecting a human baby of a similar age to dance and sing for you.

He is just a little baby. He has been uprooted from his mum and you are strangers to him, he has to get used to you. Kittens that age sleep A LOT (like 20 hours a day the lucky bastards)!

Just be patient and let him come to you. Have treats handy when he he is awake (I break up dreamies cos I have forgotten how teeny kittens are) and have things ready for him to play with so when he is awake he knows he can play with you (mine loves paper tied with string/ wool, paper bags and home made pom pom balls. He has ignored the pricey mice we got him!) . He will then associate being with you as nice and come out more.

I've got a 14 week old kitten 2 weeks ago. I kept him in the front room (I even slept on the sofa) for the 1st week as we have 2 other cats (and a cat flap) and we didn't want him getting lost or batted by the other cats. He basically spent a couple of days hiding then came out of his shell. (but we did spend our waking hours the 1st week checking where he was asleep for some unknown reason!) We didn't pick him up apart from to show him the litter box and let him come to us at all times.
We also had the telly on normal volume so he got used to the noises in the house.

Week 2 he now has the run of the place, lets us pick him up, he sleeps next to me when I'm WFH, hangs and swings from the window blinds (and ignores me saying no), runs after the the other cats tails, sleeps in between us after spending a good 30 mins attacking the evil toes that live under the duvet and follows me around like a little lamb. Basically he is turning into a normal silly kitty.

remember he is very young and the older they get the more they will become active, just like human babies.

Soon you will be on here complaining how he keeps you awake at night and is stealing your socks/ shoes/ hairbands/ pouncing on your toes/ trying to trip you up to your death Grin

We have just got a 9 week old kitten named pixie who is non-stop on the go until my dp sits down to relax after tea then she curls up in the crook of his arm and goes to sleep after grooming his arm and head

Siobhan8686 · 29/08/2018 19:23

moolady1977 that's how i remember kittens being. Full of life and energy. My children and i went out and bought a ton a kitty toys for him and he's just not interested in anything but sleeping Hmm Hoping his playful side will come out soon.

Where did he come from? He's very young? Has a vet checked him?

Glowerglass · 29/08/2018 19:27

Mine was a sleepy head at that age. 4 weeks on he was rampaging round the house.

StroppyWoman · 29/08/2018 19:33

He's a tiny wee baby. Once he gains confidence and settles in, he'll be tear-arsing around like a nutter

Lynne1Cat · 29/08/2018 20:08

At 8 weeks old, he's too young to be away from his mum and siblings. Kittens need to be 12 weeks.

I'm guessing you haven't had a cat before? Kittens are certainly not boring - but they're not meant to be a source of entertainment either.

Cats sleep for 16-20 hours a day. You little cat needs a lot of undisturbed sleep for some time yet

5000KallaxHoles · 29/08/2018 20:10

Kittens generally are hyperactive psychopaths in cute fluffy wrapping. All those nights lying perfectly still because if your toe so much as twitched it would have tiny needle sharp teeth trying to dead it in a second.

Wolfiefan · 29/08/2018 20:15

Just a thought. Did you get this cat off an advertisement? Or from a rescue?
Are you sure it's as old as you think it is?

Siobhan8686 · 29/08/2018 21:17

I got the cat from a selling site. I went to the ladies house, everything seemed ok. It was the last kitten to go out of 20 kittens Shock lady had 6 cats and im guessing a few got pregnant at the same time. I have had cats/kittens before and they have been so playful, even at a young age. He's not very small, so im sure he is 9 weeks old. We have a vets appointment in a couple of days so im sure if he's younger the vet will let me know.

I would get the kitten to a vet tomorrow. This person is breeding multiple cats for cash. It may well be younger than you think and may not be healthy.
I hope you have insurance. Hoping all goes well at the vet.
