my dog is 17 months old, and is still destroying things. Last year he destroyed the surround of the trampoline which I had to replace, yesterday I spent 2 hours sewing up the holes he put into the new one, he has chewed the protective ring too. He has chewed the kids swings, scooters, and anything that he can. I will say that he doesn't chew anything actually in the house anymore, but when it comes to the garden its a difference matter.
He also barks lots which annoys me and possibly the neighbours too. Some of it is him being protective, and when the neighbours kids tease him.
How can i stop this bahaviour?

Have you tried the 'behaviour' sparays they sell in some pet shops? Also you can buy a clicker type thing, which you press everytime they do something which they shouldn't?

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 20:52

tried the clicker thing, he ignored it.

What about a water spray?

Beauregard · 03/06/2007 20:55

With the chewing ,do you think it could be boredom?
we used to when we had our dog give him a Kong toy and stuff it with treats that he had to nibble and work at to get the treat.

Beauregard · 03/06/2007 20:56

Can't help with the barking though, our dog was always at it,god we only had to fart and he barked.

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 20:56

he has a kong (fab thing) but as soon as its empty he starts on anything, including the grass

Omg hun is he still bad!!!
Maisie is still a chewer but I have sectioned the garden off so she can't see the neighbours or get to the kids stuff. I have to make sure nothing gets left at her level otherwise she will steal i and eat it

I am currently trying bachs rescue remedy which supposed to be good for sensitive or hyperactive dogs, only been a few days so not expecing miracles.

No real advice but do know what it's like

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 20:57

silly thing is he doesn;t bark at the doorbell, just if he is in the garden

OP posts:
sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 20:59

yes still bad M. Its getting to the stage where we are thinking of rehoming him

OP posts:
lilymolly · 03/06/2007 20:59

how come he is unsupervised to chew things?

My dog was never left alone with anything she could chew, apart from the odd occasion.

Suspect it may be boredom, what breed is he?

lilymolly · 03/06/2007 21:00

why not get some profesional advice before you think about getting rid of him?

He is your responsability, remember a dog is for life...

Sorry to sound harsh, but these animals deserve a chance

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 21:00

He is a staffy, he loves to run about in the garden, and I can't supervise him all the time he is in the garden. he doesn;t chew in the house at all anymore.

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 21:01

i know, which is why I am asking for advice. I don't know where to start looking for behaviour specialist.

Oh no Can you section the garden off? Probably not the answer but what abot anoher dog If I'm honest I think having 2 makes it easier, mine keep each other company and play loads. Our worst thing is Maisie jumps the 6 foot fence and escapes on a regular basis Going to have to chain her when she is outside

lilymolly · 03/06/2007 21:02

could it me a teething issue?
My dog is not perfect by any strech of the imagination, she jumps up at people which I hate, but would never consider getting rid of her ever.

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 21:03

he is very hyper still, i had him neutured about a year ago, which i hoped would calm him down, but he is still the same. It doesn;t help that people are scared of him and we have to shut in away when they come in He is a lovely dog when he is being good.

Try googling adpt trianers and then looking for one in the area your in. Main problem is they don't come cheap
Dogpages forum is a good place with loads of advice will try to find link

lilymolly · 03/06/2007 21:05

actually magnolia, what is your experience of chaining dog up? we have to sometimes leave dog for a few hours a day whilst we are at work and currently she in a utiltiy room at home, but we have just bought a kennel and were thinking of chaining her up so at least she will be outside......what are your thougts?

magnolia1 · 03/06/2007 21:05

try here

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 21:05

You know lilly, I didn;t think about his teeth, I thought he had done his teething, but I know the vet mentioned something about his teeth when he had his checkup

Oh no would never do it when I am out! Maisie loves beeing in the garden but will jump the fences when our backs are turned if she hears a noise out on the fields. So we are going to get a long line and attach it to the wall so she can wander around her bit but not escape.

I wouldn't leave my dogs out side when I am out for fear of them getting out and me not knowing for ages

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 21:07

I want to make a pen for him, but will he just be outside barking while he is in it?

OP posts:
sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 21:08

I actually went out the other day and got halfway up the road before I realised that I had left him outside I had to come home and put him into his bed.. I felt so guilty

OP posts:
sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 21:14

Mag, what did you use to fence off your garde and how tall is it?? I have an area that would make a very good sized pen, about 15ftx5. But don;t know how to go about it?

OP posts:
sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 21:15

sorry it would be about 15x8ft not 5ft
