my dog is 17 months old, and is still destroying things. Last year he destroyed the surround of the trampoline which I had to replace, yesterday I spent 2 hours sewing up the holes he put into the new one, he has chewed the protective ring too. He has chewed the kids swings, scooters, and anything that he can. I will say that he doesn't chew anything actually in the house anymore, but when it comes to the garden its a difference matter.
He also barks lots which annoys me and possibly the neighbours too. Some of it is him being protective, and when the neighbours kids tease him.
How can i stop this bahaviour?

Sparkly, people that don't like staffs is not your problem. I can't bear sterotypical idiots who act like they are bloody devil dogs!!

Does he come when called? Sit when told ect.... If yes then you have a well behaved dog and thats whatyou should worry about more than peoples opinions. If not then maybe going back to basics with training??

magnolia1 · 03/06/2007 22:18

Sorry got all over the top then. I am just a bit pashionate about people not liking certain breeds, does my head in

Hee Hee i can't bloody spell tonight

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 22:19

he hides in the garden, the trampoline is behind the shed but can see it from the kitchen IYKWIM. there is an area that is hidden from view and chews it. he like to be in the garden, and i can't be with him all the time he is in it, which is when he starts destroying things.

yes ,when he is off his lead he will come back when called, and sits when told. He gets a bit jumpy when people come in and knocks little ones over

Sounds lovely We pop ours on a lead when small kids about near the park ect.... As for visitors. Try a couple of people who are comfortable around him and practise with them coming roung but every time he jumps up they are to fold arms and turn their back. Keep doing it until he decides to wander off or sit down then give him a treat or cuddle which ever he prefers.
He will soon get the message that keeping calm = treats/cuddles.
This has worked really well with maisie and sh rarely jumps up at visitors now

magnolia1 · 03/06/2007 22:27

Also try the bachs rescue remedy or something similar. I can't vouch for it yet but am hoping it will calm mine that little bit more.

sparklygothkat · 03/06/2007 22:28

He could still be teething,I was discussing my puppies development with a dog trainer last week and saying I'd heard dogs can get tricky around a year old, he said from about 9mth to 18mths they will go through adolescence and can get more difficult to handle and they will also chew as although their adult teeth have come through the shape of the jaw is still changing so they still have the urge to chew, it could be this as your staffie is still young. I would also recommned bitter aple of other bitter anti-chew sprays, they work for my puppy! You can get citronella collars which will spray your dog with a citrus smell whenever he barks, you could put one on him in the garden to try and decrease his barking. The citronella is just lemon juice exctract, and dogs find it unpleasant but it doesn't harm them.
Good luck with him!
