ds wants a pet. another one. Every time we go past the local pet shop he wants to go in and look at the animals, and he always asks if he can have either a rabbit or a guinea pig, and on occasions he's also asked for a hamster.

dh has said no, but I'm soft and on the verge of giving in, plus I love animals so it doesn't really bother me if I end up being the one left looking after them.

i'd initially said no to rabbits as had heard they're very hard work and dig up your garden even if you have a run and eat the plants and die of fly strike. Said no to hamsters too as they're nocturnal and can be agressive, but had been waivering about guinea pigs. but still concerned about having guinea pigs living outside - and what do you do with them in the winter? so thought maybe as a compromise what about gerbils as they live indoors and aren't nocturnal ... so any views?

rabbits are lovely and can be housetrained. mine was lovely guinea pigs are ok but sometimes too fast for young children to handle. hamsters are ok but nocturnal. gerbils are good too.

Guinea pigs are fine outside so long as they have a good hutch and lots of bedding. Make sure you get 2 though as guniea pigs need company.

Gerbils are fantastic to watch. I have rats, see profile for piccys
You need to get more than 1 rat/gerbil as they like company.
