some ba***** ran over my kitten...then left her to die in agony!!

Heartbroken and struggling to maintain any composure with my 2 young boys whose kitten has been run over. whoever did it will have known they hit her, especially as we have 6 other cats..one of which was her mummy who is still out there looking for her to come home. devastated.

sorry for your sons upset but it is a very real risk when letting your cat out. Hopefully in the future you will keep your cats at home and protect the local wildlife as well as your cat's safety. In some built up places/busy roads in the uk its estimated that 70% of cats will get killed before they die of natural causes. That is really awful and should be classed as neglect in my eyes. It isn't the fault of the driver.

Are you saying it's neglectful to let cats out?. I would say its more cruel to keep them inside When they want to go outside

FP239??? Cats roam. It's what they are made to do. The risk that they will die is just a natural consequence and a life without roaming for a cat is not a life worth living, IMO. Neglect indeed!

Keeping a roaming cat indoors is cruelty.

Wasn't the fault of the driver, yet they didn't stop to help the poor thing

Im so sorry OP, i took in a cat years ago and moved him with me when me and my ex split up. He was amazing and at the time i wasn't even a cat person, he'd been abandoned i expect from an owner that had left the block of flats.

He had a wonderful life but unfortunately a few years ago after he'd gone missing ans searching every street every day and night, my mum had seen posters and a number, a lovely lady tried to find us to let us know my darling Pudding had been hit an the driver drove off, she'd taken him to the vets for us :'( i was heartbroken but if it wasn't for that kind lady, i'd never have known what happened. I have him in a little beautiful urn in a special place at home

It sickens me that people can do this and drive off not giving any thought to the ownee/s at home :(

I am so sorry for you. I lost my beautiful 3 year old boy last summer and I still cry whenever I think about him (have a lump in my throat writing this!)
I found it very hard to accept that someone could just drive off knowing and I also felt it was not the right end for him - he deserved a more noble end than he got.

That's so sad OP and I'm so sorry for your boys. FP we had a house cat and she was only that way because of severe abuse leaving her too frightened to lead a normal cat life. That was very sad.

Actually FP239 makes a very good point. Too many cats are killed due to owner negligence of letting them out to wonder. Dogs and toddlers would enjoy free roaming too but we don't allow it, it's just a cultural quirk that cats are treated differently.

I'm very sorry to hear your kitten has been killed OP.

OP I doubt that the driver ran over your kitten on purpose. It was an accident. Perhaps the driver couldn't stop to take care of the kitten or didn't know what to do? (it's not illegal to drive off after hitting a cat I believe). Sorry for the loss of your kitten.

I don't think it's negligent to let cats out but I do think think there has been a shift away from the norm of letting cats free roam now. We live in a densely populated area with busy roads. My cat only goes outside supervised on a lead in the garden. More and more people are now keeping cats indoors or cat proofing gardens so that they can't get run over or killed by a cat killer or come to harm in some other way. I'm really sorry about your kitten, OP.

It's the risk you take owning cats, the driver might not have noticed or thought they'd missed it. Sad but the driver isn't to blame for hitting it and you don't know if they intentionally left it.

Of course it isn't. It's not like thousands of cats are needlessly killed by cars when they are otherwise in good health, is it?

We don't let young children and other animals roam free because it would mean putting them in harms way, cats deserve the same consideration and protection.
