Those of you with dog walkers - how much do you pay?

For an hour's dog walk, and would you expect to pay double that rate for 2 dogs, just the same as you would pay for one, or fractionally more?

Doesn't apply to me anymore as my dear dog was put to sleep last year. But I used to pay 14pounds a day for sleepovers and 8 pounds for hourly walks. From what the other dog-owners are paying, 14pounds was the cheapest in the market. I think the market rate is 15-16pounds now. I live in London by the way.

So sorry! Realised I didn't answer your question at all. Not sure about paying double for 2 dogs. I think I would ask for a discount.

handlemecarefully · 08/03/2007 16:43

Ok - well I was quoted £7 per hour to cover both my dogs (a Bernese Mountain dog and a little JR cross). I was so shocked at the excellent value for money I told her I would pay her a tenner! Then felt daft for being over generous - but it seems that even for a tenner it is under the market rate.

I live near South Coast which isn't quite London cost of living but not too far off

I think someone around here charges £6/dog but don't know about multiples.

handlemecarefully · 08/03/2007 16:45

I asked about what you would expect for both dogs because a different dog walker had told me she charged £10 per dog for an hours walk, so £20 for 2

Completely at other end of spectrum to the one I saw today

I pay £16 p/h for 2 dogs (think it would be £8 for one) in SE London. There are much cheaper ones round here but they walk several dogs at once, sometimes loads (mine get walked on their own), and some walkers aren't insured, which I think is essential. I only use the service once a week when I am out but they have been great.

Flabbergasted.

Do people really pay a dog walker more than double what they would pay a childminder?

I'm very obviously in the wrong business.

A friend of mine is a dog walker in St Albans and charges £8 per dog per hour. He is insured and will only walk dogs from the same household together.

handlemecarefully · 08/03/2007 19:42

She will only be taking my 2 dogs together - no other hanger ons.

I used to pay 7.50 in Windsor for 1 dog to join a "group walk" (picked up by van) which lasted anything from 1 to 3 hours.

I pay for visit not for dog, 8 per visit (each visit lasts for about 45 min and includes walking and opening/closing of curtains, etc. when we are away.
