ChopinRocks · 02/01/2007 22:36

I hereby offficialy open The Labrador Club - because they deserve it!

Has anyone else got a soppy lab?

Ours is 16months old, black. At night he sleeps in his bed next to ours with his tongue slightly out and snores!

His fave food - socks!

MAMAG THANKYOU for getting the photo up.

Johnny loves having his photo taken, and yes he does look like he is watching the telly!

2labs - your babies are lovely! Maybe we could have a mumsnet lab meet up! Can you imagine ..................!!

Now that is bizarre.

ChopinRocks · 04/01/2007 17:15

.............. a burning question. Is it wise for male labs to have the chop? We have been deliberating over it for a while, even booked up the vet but it just feels horrible.

Chopin, why do you want to have it done? Is he aggressive? I hadn't even considered having Rocky "done", I think it does change their personality (well, only speaking from remembering a friend's dog who was v quiet afterwards)

ChopinRocks · 05/01/2007 13:54

hi mamag, well my dad keeps saying to us that we should have it done as it decreases risk of some illnesses but, i have heard it changes their personality and no he isnt at aggressive.

i have a guest black lab

she really smells and leaves horrible hairs everywhere

but seems quite nice natured

MummyPenguin · 05/01/2007 14:00

ha ha perhaps your guest just needs a bath! My female black lab doesn't smell, doesn't moult too much either.

Enid · 05/01/2007 14:01

no baths dont help

I just dont think I am cut out for a dog

MamaG · 05/01/2007 14:33

I wouldn't bother then Chopin - he sounds like a lovely dog and i wouldn't want to risk him changing - don't think you do either by teh sound of it!

Enid, I'm afraid you can only be a temporary member of The Labrador Club

HandyTrinkett · 05/01/2007 16:47

Hey can I join??

Bracken is a nearly 4 year old working lab who enjoys running, swimming shooting and sleeping. This time of year sees him earning his keep fetching duck, pheasants and pigeon home...

The pic (if it works) was taken last year after he'd been chasing in and out of the river on a frosty morning.. ..hence the ice stuck to his chest..

MamaG · 05/01/2007 17:16

oh he's lovely. Rocky's a bit gun shy, bless him but he does love to retrieve game

mrspink27 · 05/01/2007 21:10

Re Archie and his long legs, this pic was taken a month ago when he was going through his gangly stage, his body is catching up now and he is starting to fill out. He should be a stocky lab, rather than a tall lean one, if that makes sense!

How did you get involved in field stuff, i.e. retrieving game? I would love to do some field classes but cant find anywhere in the area.

MummyPenguin · 05/01/2007 22:20

Bracken's lovely, he looks really wide eyed an alert. My Bella does too. When there's food around.

ChopinRocks · 05/01/2007 23:30

bracken is gorgeous! has a beautiful coat.

What beautiful dogs. I must have a go at getting photos on here. When G was little she had HUGE paws and long legs. A MN labrador meetup would just be too mad.

Both dogs are flat out ontop of the clean washing as I type this - ooops. Serves me right for leaving it on the floor.

MamaG · 07/01/2007 09:37

The worst thing I find about having a male lab is having to occasionally clean his, er, thingy. You know when theres a little blob of stuff on teh end of it?

Rocky once shook himself, said blob flew across the room to land in my horrified DH's cup of tea! Now, whenever I see a blob, I have to clean it with a tissue!

Gross

babywhiting · 07/01/2007 09:57

noy sure if i can type in here as i havn't got a lab but just wanted to know if anyone knows any reputable choc lab breeders i live in kent and am looking to buy one as soon as i find the right puppy. can anyone help? also anyone that owns a choc lab what are they like i hear they're scatty!!!
ihave always owned gsd's but would love a choc lab! anyone?

MamaG · 07/01/2007 11:03

have you looked on the Kennel Club website? That would be my first port of call - good luck

or there is this puppy

When I get my next lab, I'm going to buy from these breeders - they look great.

babywhiting · 07/01/2007 11:21

thanks mamag yes i have looked at the kc register but i just wanted to see if anyone could pinpoint one particular breeder they have had experience of.

apparently all the nicest dogs are from scotland so one ex breeder told me.(looks like im in for a long journey)

so are they scatty???
and any tips?

MummyPenguin · 07/01/2007 11:50

Chocolate Labs are bonkers. Also, if it's just a pet you're after, i.e. not a working dog, I wouldn't get a pup from working stock. They can be much harder work, in terms of needing more exercise, restlessness etc.

HandyTrinkett · 07/01/2007 13:34

Agree with MP about not getting a dog from working stock for a pet. They tend to be a little more in need of exercise.. ...Bracken is a working dog and hasn't been out today as I'm (supposed to be) working so he keeps looking at me whenever I pop down stairs.

We'll be out later though but it'll take a few hours to get him properly worn out.

babywhiting · 07/01/2007 13:39

thank you both for your help i need the show breed i guess! i've got the book now on labs so i'm reading well.
i know alot about gsd's so all health feeding etc are siniliar which i know al about.

i so miss not having a dog!

also bitch or dog, ive only ever had dogs but any suggestions on labs really welcome!!!

MummyPenguin · 07/01/2007 18:29

I've found bitches, with most breeds, easier to train, and just not quite so, well, naughty. However, My Lab is a bitch (working stock...) and is much more exuberant than my male Golden Retriever. I've been working on a few training techniques with both my dogs recently, and my Lab gets so carried away, where as the Goldie is easier to work with, as he's calmer and more receptive, and doesn't 'run away with himself' like she does.

HandyTrinkett, I'm sure I've run into your dog on that nice walk behind The Grove opposite Redhill Common. The name Bracken rang a bell, and after talking to you on the hangover thread, and finding out you live near me, I'm wondering if I've seen Bracken there. Possibly with your wife?

HandyTrinkett · 07/01/2007 18:54

You're likely to have seen Bracken with my mum! I work in London rather a lot so mum helps out walking my dog with her one.. ..she's got a cross old english/boxer..

MummyPenguin · 07/01/2007 19:06

I think I have seen her.
