Dh says that a Dog's home dachshund / jack russell cross (puppy) would be "too risky"

Said puppy is circa 16 months old and is litter mate of a completely adorable puppy that my friend has just acquired from the Dogs home.

Wouldn't it be lovely for the 2 siblings to stay in touch?

We have an 8 month old Bernese Mountain Dog who has been a piece of piss to look after. Very easy.

Have been wanting to provide her with a canine companion.

Would love this dachshund / jack russell cross but dh says he has only ever had pedigrees and is mistrustful of cross breeds (you 'don't know what you are getting')

Can anyone think of strategies to persuade him?

P.s I do all the dog walking, feeding, grooming and most of the poo picking up so you would think it would be my call!

Tell him he's a cross-breed!
I've got a gorgeous cross breed whippet/greyhound. In my experience I've always found the cross breeds better cos there's not 'highly strung' inbred tendencies (this is just MY experience you understand).
I'd go for it - huge great Bernese Mountain dog and ikl daschund/jack russ

Tell him you know exactly what you are getting.. it is a cross between a daschund and a jack russel! Have a look at the breed traits of both of them and imagine a smattering of both

Oh yes, and there is always the hybrid vigour argument... they rarely have health problems. My dog was spawn of dogs of crufts calibre (they actually entered, not just breeder wishful thinking!). The sire had the most challenge certificates of any of his breed. Mating took place after careful selection looking at blood lines etc etc. And my dog is knackered. Well and truly. Lucky we bought him as a family pet and not as some hope for dog shows, breeding or such like!!!

Yes, will look up breed characteristics of both to try and divine how dog will turn up...

Rescue dog. I could only get a rescue dog. I had a brilliant one. If you train them from puppies you should be fine.

What you're getting is a dog far less likely to be burdened by the medical and mental issues bred into so many of the pedigree breeds.
Pedigrees are bred only to look a certain way, regardless of whether this is healthy for them. That's why you get so many pedigree dogs with hip, nose, back, teeth etc problems.
The small gene pool they are drawn from also leads to many of the same mental issues you find in very small, isolated communities IYKWIM!
Cross breeds tend to be more robust, and rescued dogs tend to be terribly grateful little souls.
How's that for an argument?

I think cross breeds as such are fine, but I think jack russells are NOT around children. Just can't trust 'em, no matter how old they are and what they do.

So I'd go for pretty much any cross breed except a JR cross, I'm afraid.

JRs can be really good so long as they have a LOT of space to run around in. They need 10 times the space of your average big dog, otherwise they go bonkers!

Well done HyacinthB on the dog - hope he works out Ok for you.
Just wanted to say that although JR's have a reputation as nippers/biters I really do think that it is how dogs are treated that affects their behaviour. As a child we always had JR's and they were wonderful companions and never bit us. We now have a rescue JR and a 19 month old. The JR loves DS and is very protective of him. I will always be cautious, as I would with any breed of dog but he is great with DS and is lots of fun, although he does try to run the house!

OK - got her from Battersea yesterday - arrived home around 15.00. She is called Mojo. She is half dachshund and half jr but looks more dachshund (colour..floppy ears). I had a cross breed jr as a child and she was lovely so although I've heard the same about jr's PPH, I think it will be fine as long as she is trained appropriately...(certainly that is what the rehomer thinks too)

My older pup (8 month old Bernese) is attending dog training which has proven invaluable and Mojo will go to the same class (albeit the 'starters' class)

She is adorable but very tiny compared to what I am used to and I've stepped on her paw twice

She's a bit needy too, but hopefully that will settle down when she's been here a while...

She is getting on fine with the Bernese but I do have to watch Belle (the Bernese)....she swiped Mojo with her paw - all in play of course and with no malicious intent, but understandably Mojo wasn't amused....

and the size of a burnese paw is pretty big compared to a tiny jr X!!!

I bet she will settle really well
