Ahem. I thought an hysterical title would help me draw all the experts out of the woodwork.

All of the above is true apart from the 'keeps biting everyone' bit. He only bites me. He only bites me when I approach him.

He was hand reared and this behaviour came as quite a shock to me. He used to be a lovely bird and would eat banana out of your mouth (I was 11 okay, it seemed normal at the time Blush )

The only recent change in his environment is that his cage has been taken away and now lives in an artificial tree. Perhaps this is over stimulating him?

I have gathered via Google that he is still getting the wrong diet. I am off to buy him the correct food before this evening when I go round to feed him again. Could this be effecting his behaviour?

How can I gain his trust and keep my fingers intact?

Yesterday for instance he put his foot out as though he wanted to stpo up onto my arm. I obliged. Once on my arm he bit badly enough to rip my jumper and bruise my wrist.

I have looked for specialist Macaw forums to post on but can only find very quiet American ones. I have found a specialist training website but they want me to pay to read their training articles.

Any suggestions are welcome.

He might miss his cage , the bit of territory that belong to him. Perhap he sees the whole house as his and you a a threat to it ?

He's my friend now. We have cuddles.

I just kept feeding him grapes until he liked me again. Now he likes cuddles better than grapes Grin

I think they feel safe in their cages, I'm not sure why you got rid of it? Same reason that nervous dogs often stay in cages for spells. It is territorial.

Was a complete Bird Nut as a teen.

ps: what kind of Macaw, how old?

He's a blue and gold and he'll be almost 20 now. He was hand reared by us.

We removed the cage because he was feather plucking so he was built a larger, more entertaining tree type thingy and we couldn't source materials large enough to make a cage to fit.
