My 'friend' is a cow and I need to rehome her guinea pigs!

Okay, this is a desperate plea, my 'friend' says the smell of her piggies is making her sick and they need to be rehomed, she has asked at pets at home but they have no room, she has asked on facebook. No one wants them. Thats all the trying she has done! She is now saying they are going to be released over the common tonight! SHIT! My DH will go balistic if i take in anymore pets....running total of about 25, various animals, lots of vet fees and high food bills as it is so i can understand...but they will be eaten by a fox in minutes.

2 male negelcted piggies about to go to their deaths. Would anyone like them??

Sad

BabyDubsEverywhere · 09/06/2011 22:00

always a good thing :)

I'm excited about the pictures!

onclefestere · 10/06/2011 09:48

Worszel you must put some pics up when they arrive Grin. I am thinking now that if I don't get any more guinea pigs I shall have...chickens! Have been thinking about this for some time and am mightily pleased with the idea.

WorzselMummage · 10/06/2011 17:32

I'm picking them up tonight Grin

onclefestere · 10/06/2011 17:35
Grin you will be fine! Definitely rename them though - I like the Dr Who theme!!
AtYourCervix · 10/06/2011 17:43

reading this i am so very tempted to get myself a piigy or 3 Grin

tabulahrasa · 10/06/2011 17:51

the limescaley stuff won't come off - my cage got it after a few years, it doesn't come off at all.

Worszel, they really are dead easy pets and nice and interactive too. I miss mine

onclefestere · 10/06/2011 17:54

you can try a dinner knife and vinegar, but basically no, it doesn't come off does it tabulah Sad. But they will be such happy piggies now they have a proper family to love them and take an interest in them that it won't matter. It doesn't make the cage smell, it just stains....And now to work on the cunning plan to acquire chickens...

BabyDubsEverywhere · 10/06/2011 18:11

The cage doesnt smell at all now, and when its full of wood shavings you cant see it anyway.....It doesnt effect the use of the cage. Bits of it has come off, bleech and scrape was working, The whole plastic base was covered in it under the black congealed news paper Also had to give them a new water bottle as theirs was completely green, they only ever filled it up, never washed it out!!!

They are much more spritely already, ive put in a couple of Chubes, enough hay to cover them and lots of fresh foods, they have been chirping away all day, feels quite rewarding that little squeek!

I have wussed out of clipping their nails Im afraid. I have been able to handle them a bit but they are obviously nervous, and i dont have another pair of hands to help, i was worried about hurting them. Sorry. A vet will do it cheaply though and as they will be outside all summer in their new home they probably wont need doing again.

Im trying to find a way of securing the cage for transport, the base doesnt fix to the wire part, i have tried taking some of my clips off one of my cage but they didnt work.....any ideas?

Hooray for Babydubs and Worzsel! Well done everyone, big guinea piggy hugs and earlobe nibbles all round.

Be ready to fall in LOVE with those little cuties, won't you Worszsel? And pictures please, as soon as you can. If you put one of your new recruits up, I will attempt to upload the ones I took of my 3 the other day when they came inside to be dried in a towel (got caught out in the run in the rain) - they are such little lovelies.

hairypotter · 10/06/2011 20:43

I've just read the thread and am in awe of the power of mumsnet. What a fantastic happy ending!

I am thinking about getting piggies now after reading this to replace our fabby gerbils who are sadly no longer with us Sad

WorzselMummage · 10/06/2011 20:56

They're here!! OMG they are CUTE and they talk to each other and everything

The bigger, black and white, one spent the journey peering at me from the cage in the back of the car, he was weighing me up.. i'd love to know what he was thinking.

They are both hiding in their box now we're home so i'll give them a couple of days to settle in and then start with the cuddles Grin

I'm going to buy a run tomorrow. Any recommendations ?

Thanks BabyDubs :)

loler · 10/06/2011 22:06

Congratulations on getting the boys home!

We just need names and photos.....please!

WorzselMummage · 10/06/2011 22:12

We'll I think they are going to be Dr Who and Van Gogh Hmm

DD is pondering the names. She was SO excited when we came in :)

They have just eaten a carrot, some lettuce and a few dandilions.. piglets!

akaEmmaFrost · 11/06/2011 12:19

Have a look on ebay for a run, loads of bargains for cages and such like on there.

So glad you got them. I actually think that you fall in love with guinea pigs once you have them, no other pet will do! They are such lovely gentle little characters.

One of mine, Ruby, is a bit feisty and will occasionally nibble my finger if I try to get her out when she doesn't want to. I always think she is saying "now look I dont want to have to do this, but I will if you dont leave me alone!" If push came to shove though she could never bite me and I think we both know this Grin.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 12/06/2011 22:23

How are you finding your new friends Worzsel? :)

OP posts:
WorzselMummage · 13/06/2011 18:16

They're great thanks. Guinea Pigs are so funny... Who'd have thought that!

They are Dr Who and Rory though neither of them suit their names at all but it's DD's choice so we'll stick with it.. If we ever have an actual human baby
boy Rory will have to have his name changed Grin

I clipped both of their claws on saturday and the bigger, black and white, one's were so long they we're curled round and so long i'm surprised he could walk and the little black one has a toe missing :(

They are both actually quite friendly and really entertaining but i'm not 100% sure they have worked out who's the boss yet, they seem to spend most of the time they're not eating ( so really only about 6% of the time!) telling each other off about something or other.. is that normal ?

They have been treated to a run but whenever i have put them in it the just hide in the house bit.. sure they will come out eventually :)

onclefestere · 14/06/2011 09:33

they talk lots to each other - that sounds quite normal!! well done for clipping their claws - excellent stuff!
Yes, they will come out eventually. You could try putting a bundle of hay in the middle of the run as an incentive - GPs are very stomach driven! Bless them Grin

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 14/06/2011 09:50

Hurray for pigs!

We have two - Marble and Luke (named after Skywalker natch) and they are soo cute. They appear to be obsessed with basil and watermelon.

It's really hard to get hay here in Australia, but they seem quite happy with hidey holes and grass during the day/pellets at night (they come in as there are snakes and whatnot here!).

Have a lovely time with your pigs Worzel. Smile

loler · 14/06/2011 19:36

the most fantastic of names ever...dd is very excited that you've gone for a double who related name. We're not a million miles from you (staffs) so who knows maybe Amy Pond will meet up with her men (easier than travelling through time!).

Ours are always bossy each other around too - if one gets left behind it screams for the others though so they must really like each other. We got one of our purring for the first time last night - was very cute!

Be aware though - I found the obsession come over me very quickly - baby bores have nothing on guinea bores!

RubberDuck · 15/06/2011 10:36

Well this thread has brought me into the fold of guinea pig bores and after intensive research over the weekend, I got two piggies yesterday and they're GORGEOUS! We are so thrilled with them even though the poor things are terrified and mostly hiding.

I did spot them come out into the run though earlier, nibble the grass then scarper back inside when they saw me watching! There's a photo of them on my profile from this morning - dh took it while still swearing blind that he's totally not interested in them Hmm

loler · 15/06/2011 12:52

Dogs have their own section, horses have theirs - maybe we could campaign for a piggie room/hutch - after all MN is responsible for most of us having them!

Bramble and Biscuit are lovely - really pretty markings.
