Okay, this is a desperate plea, my 'friend' says the smell of her piggies is making her sick and they need to be rehomed, she has asked at pets at home but they have no room, she has asked on facebook. No one wants them. Thats all the trying she has done! She is now saying they are going to be released over the common tonight! SHIT! My DH will go balistic if i take in anymore pets....running total of about 25, various animals, lots of vet fees and high food bills as it is so i can understand...but they will be eaten by a fox in minutes.

2 male negelcted piggies about to go to their deaths. Would anyone like them??

Sad

So what would be the best course of action with them ? leave them to settle in for a few weeks and then start handling or start handling straight away ?

what about veccs and teeth clipping etc ?

We had a rescue rabbit once who's teeth had grown uo through the roof of his mouth and he had to have them all removed :(

alemci · 09/06/2011 20:27

will someone will have them? I think it is absolutely awful when people release gp's and rabbits into the wild. I would disown this 'friend'. I remember working with someone who did that to her daughters rabbits. I was so shocked

WorzselMummage · 09/06/2011 20:30

I think we will probably have them, i'm just mulling it over in my mind a bit :)

clayre · 09/06/2011 20:31

Worzel if you can find out what their fav veg/fruit is you can bribe them into getting handled, if they think the will get a tasty bit they wont mind being picked up and cuddled!

They dont need vacs, you can get toys and things for their cage that are designed to be chewed and keep teeth down, mine need their claws cut every few weeks but i think if they get to run about outside it doesnt need done.

itsnicetobenice · 09/06/2011 20:39

we had rabbitsd yrs ago - evil scratchy untameable beggers, i was cautios of getting pets again but honestly they are v clean compared to shitting machine rabbits rabbits , i have never had mine at the vets though a friedn who works at one checked em over last month and all well, as mine out alot the nails wear naturally. Mine love cauli leaves, brocolli stalks and pears. Will you keep them in or get a hutch and have em out?

WorzselMummage · 09/06/2011 20:42

well, In in the winter and outside in the summer would be my plan, i've been keeping my eye on freecycle for a hutch and we have a decent sized garden so could get a run.

itsnicetobenice · 09/06/2011 20:44

what you going to call them? Grin

WorzselMummage · 09/06/2011 20:46

We'll i hope they have got names!

( if not though, that's the kids dept not mine Grin )

WorzselMummage · 09/06/2011 20:48

Though, I'm not allowed any more actual babies die to meany DH so i might use my fantasy baby names which are Rory and Samuel Blush

WorzselMummage · 09/06/2011 20:48

Die= DUE

loler · 09/06/2011 20:53

If they are making a noise they can't be really shy - Ours have settled down really quickly but it took about a week before they started talking - has taken about 3 weeks to be able to catch them easily. I hope ours come to a whistle eventually - how long did it take to learn that trick?

My girls will do anything for a dandelion leaf - good way to get the dc to go for a walk with a carrier bag to go leaf picking - free fun for all!

I've just put a pic on my profile too (obsessed I tell you!)

WorzselMummage · 09/06/2011 20:55
Grin

If they were girls i think we'd have an Amy Pond aswell and probably a River Song.

WorzselMummage · 09/06/2011 20:56

Maybe we ought to call them Rory and The Doctor.

loler · 09/06/2011 20:57

dd would be so proud that her amy pond has a dr out there to search for.

itsnicetobenice · 09/06/2011 20:59

awww you have 3? I almost got another from a rescue centre the other month but was worried 3 was a crowd. Anyway the whistling, i whistle and walk towards the hutch and because they are greedy little blighters they know generally it means food so they scamper past me and up their ramp - they dont run into my arms by any means but as soon as they are in they are catchable. They dont run away when i have them as geberally i sit with em on a fleece blanket and they nibble on whatever fresh offerings im offering. Aww they are just so lovely.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 09/06/2011 21:09

They are easy pets, which makes their case even more Sad for me. They are now in our make shift run chopping on some grass, they havent even been in the room with people in for quite a while. They are skittish but some naturally are anyway, my two youngest are still quite jumpy, they all settle with time.

I find that if you shush shush shush them when you feed fresh food, (I use mainly spring greens some apple and carrots) when you feed them they then associate that with good feeling, do that when you hold them, sit by the cage, etc, i doubt they will take any longer to get used to you that if you bought babies from a pet shop.

I have just spent best part of an hour bleaching the cage, its still not clean. i think it would probably come off with wire wool, but i dont have any, I have cleaned it best i can but had to stop as its raining and i only have a make shift outside run....bloody nightmare this is! Anyway, lots of shavings and loads of fresh hay, fresh food and water, Ive put a throw over the top of the cage so they can only se out the front, my house is very noisy, that may be adding to their skittishness (is that even a word?)

Anyway, need to give the wire of the cage a wipe over, but they are good to go.

Also the wire cage part doesnt attatch any way to the plastic base part. In truth if it were me I would look for replacement housing once fund were available. They dont have a place to hide in there at the moment, ive scoured the house but i cant find anything suitable, a clean plant pot on its side would do, doesnt need to be fancy for them to be happy :)

I think I might have one of the large ferplast cages in the loft at my parents house but cant be sure.

i've got millions of empty plantpots and can probably fashion them a house out of wood anyway :)

what will i need to get ?

BabyDubsEverywhere · 09/06/2011 21:18

They were called Jako and Tito :/ nice...much prefer the doctor who link Smile

I will get DH to upload a picture when he gets back....his day never ends!

They havent had veg before! but are loving what Ive put in, they may have loose stool for a day or so with the introduction of actual food but thats common and will settle. They seem hardy little things. The black and white ones nails have grown so much they twist over one another, we will get them in the livingroom when the hobbits go to bed and try and sort them out. Ive checked their teeth and they seem normal, Im not a vet though, just an enthusiastic owner Grin

If you feel they seem to need 'too much' i understand Smile

Sorry cross post,

Woodshavings, Hay, Guinea pig pellets, a mineral stone helps with their teeth and will last forever, i find Chubes are good value (like large loo rolls)

Thats it really, then just daily give fresh veg/fruit and top up hay, food and water. My indoor cages are completely cleaned out twice a week, i find that works well for us.

Simple :)

WorzselMummage · 09/06/2011 21:23

I think you want to keeep them Grin

I've been thinking about it and am just getting more and more excited by the prospect. If you want to keep them I dont mind but if not i'm sure we can provide them with suitable accomodation :)

My Mums not sure about the cage :( Is the one they are in a real state ?

BabyDubsEverywhere · 09/06/2011 21:29

Its usable, its looks like limescale in a kettle, it would come of if you have the time to scrub it more, honestly i have tried, but like i said it started to rain and i had no where else to put them. (should explain i have a dog and cat, two toddlers, various other animals too but the first four are the problem with keeping them away from scared new animals whilst bleaching cages!), the wire part will wipe clean, about to do that now. if a few holes were drilled in the sides of the plastic base you could cable tie it together. Saying that, they have been in it for 6 months and its never been a problem using it not attatching so maybe that would only matter in transport and once in place at home wouldnt be a problem? It looks a million times better than they got here already, it doesnt bother the piggies :)

I really dont want to keep them, also dont want to foist them on someone without being honest about their condition!

itsnicetobenice · 09/06/2011 21:30

talking about chubes - i go to our local carpet shop and they give me them huge cardboard rolls for free and we can saw them to our desired length - i am sooooooooo tight Grin

WorzselMummage · 09/06/2011 21:34

add me to facebook, it's sarah jukes and my avatar is a picture of a Nun Hmm, it's probably easier to talk on there.

As long as you think they will come goo in the end, I am unphased.

loler · 09/06/2011 21:41

Cilit Bang will get the limescale stuff off - probably not the best thing to use for the weekly clean but Ok to revive the cage. It got every last trace of it off our second hand cage.

If it can't be rescued - Pre-loved has loads of cages/hutches on

BabyDubsEverywhere · 09/06/2011 21:46

Ive added you, my name is Emily Worley, dont tell the rest of mumsnet about my face tattoo though, i will be deleted Grin

I have took some pictures of them, i will upload when DH is home.
