Petition: Introduce an immediate ban on the sale and promotion of smart glasses

The government should immediately ban the sale and promotion of glasses that contain recording capability. The government should explore using existing laws, such as RIPA, GDPR, DPA to take immediate action, whilst beginning the process of new legislation.

Signed. Thanks !

I won’t be signing a petition to ban a device that helps disabled people and that has many positive uses.

I would be more likely to sign one that calls for updating of regulations around public filming and photography in line with modern technology.

This petition is embarrassing and clearly shows the creator knows nothing about Smart Glasses, their technology and use cases or ways they can benefit people.

It comes across as someone who’s read a Social media article titled “Men will video you without your knowledge” and have immediately decided they must be banned.

Yabvvu. Theses are an absolute lifeline for my visually impaired friend.

The petition is calling for debate.

Do you really want to live in a world in which anyone can film you without your knowledge?

Let’s at least talk about this technology and the implications.

Question for anyone who knows the answer: how will we stop kids wearing these to cheat in exams? My understanding is that they are not obviously different from normal glasses?

This nails it.
And why the furor over smart glasses when we have cctv on every corner, all public buildings now run facial recognition on everyone coming and going, outside or in. Most drivers have dash cams. Most cyclists have go pros on their helmets. You’re already being recorded in public 24/7. Nanny cams are all over homes, ring doorbells record your property and passersby even your neighbours comings and goings in some cases.

Smart glasses go with the wearer..they are more likely to help a victim prove who attacked them or harassed them then they are to be used by a criminal.

The government and the public already do. We are beyond that and have been for years. The courts already decided no expectation of privacy in public.

OP don’t be disingenuous

Introduce an immediate ban on the sale and promotion of smart glasses

An immediate ban isn’t calling for a debate.

Honestly? I’m being recorded 24/7 when I’m outside my own house. I don’t put myself in precarious positions, I don’t say anything I don’t mean to people so, if someone wishes to record me they’ll be incredibly bored watching it back. From what I can tell the pros, particularly to anyone with a disability, far outweigh any cons.
