Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus (e.g., on ovaries, fallopian tubes or pelvic lining, but they can grow in any other organ including the lungs and the brain). It causes inflammation and pain - during and/or before and after menstruation.
Common symptoms:
(often debilitating) pelvic pain
Heavy or irregular periods
Pain during or after sex
Pain when using the toilet (urinating or having stool)
Difficulty getting pregnant, infertility
chronic fatigue
bloating or nausea
Around 15% of women have endometriosis, and it takes them on average 9-11 years to get a diagnosis (11 years for women with ethnic minority backgrounds). There is no cure and very little help available in terms of reducing and managing symptoms. More research is desperately needed.
