Did you watch Dirty Business on Channel 4?

Ashley Smith and Professor Peter Hammond, the real people behind Channel 4’s acclaimed series Dirty Business, portrayed by David Thewlis and Jason Watkins have launched a petition calling for a binding national referendum on whether England’s water industry should be returned to public ownership. It has passed 40,000 signatures in under a week, with numbers continuing to rise rapidly. Revealing the severe public health risk from sewage on our beaches and the corruption of the water companies, the petition has already triggered a mandatory government response and is heading towards the 100,000 signatures required to force a parliamentary debate.
High profile figures including Carol Vorderman and David Thewlis have shared the petition, and support continues to grow across the country. They seem to want to give the people a say in who owns our water...

Petition: Hold a referendum to bring the water industry into public ownership

Hold a binding national referendum on whether the water industry should be returned to public ownership. Water is a basic human necessity; we believe our privatised system has failed, so the public should decide who owns and controls it.

No. This isn’t a good way to make policy or a good use of referendums.

The Brexit vote was advisory becuase of the principle of parliamentary sovereignty.

This isn’t the kind of issue that calls for re-writing that core constitutional principle.
