The media are being quite quiet about this petition (someone's palm has probably been greased).

Yes, precisely.

Welby was told about it in 2013, and also told that police were being informed. He took this on trust. Police had been informed, but apparently through the wrong channels. A church safeguarding officer raised it with her police liaison contact, who did nothing. A year later in 2014 it was raised separately with Oxfordshire police, and church officials had a meeting with two detectives about it. Oxfordshire police subsequently decided not to investigate.

Makin’s criticism of Welby is that:

1)He should have ensured that the crime was formally reported to police, with a crime reference number obtained, rather than informally reported to the church’s police liaison contacts, and he should have verified that this had been done rather than taking it on trust from his staff

  1. When police subsequently failed to investigate, the church and Welby should have chased them and challenged their inaction.

There is no suggestion in the Makin report that Welby or anyone else tried to cover it up in 2013. Some posters on this thread have misunderstood that.

There are several people on this thread who are intent on demonizing Welby and portraying him as evil - regardless of the facts. He has admitted that he should have been more rigorous in following up the case, but he rather naively thought that the police would do their job properly.

Your trusting the BBC 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Read the actual report the police were not informed until 2017

The BBC WERE actually right in that the matter was reported to the police in 2013 - but not through the correct channels and so it was not formally investigated. Welby was naive in assuming that it had all been done correctly and would be therefore investigated correctly.

There is far far more to it than that and well you know it.

He is not 'evil', I haven't seen him called that. However, he has shown a massive dereliction of duty in a very important role thereby allowing more boys to be abused. . You called him 'a great leader' and a 'good man'. He is far from that.

You have vigorously defended him from every angle on this thread and dismissed the victims whilst you are busy speculating what the Church will do next.

And in his position didn't think to follow it up?

Hang on a minute, people follow up when their car has been stolen. Yet a crime of this magnitude isn't??? It's just ignored, brushed under the carpet, and as the Makin report says, that was to protect the Church, and hope the victims would go away. And Welby holds responsibiiity for that.

Looks like he was just too busy doing other things, like pontificating about goodness, kindness and morality to the nation. Clearly he was too busy, being a moral leader, and all of that, to do the right thing, at the time.

Yes when your leader of the organisation and people have been treated in a way that very likely will leave them insecure and vulnerable for life

UltraHorse · 16/11/2024 16:08

Welby naive according to Aussie above why did he get the job then

UltraHorse · 16/11/2024 16:19

Interesting article in the mail today seems his wife was involved and knew about the abuse certainly no intention of belonging to an evangelical church now or any church really

UltraHorse · 16/11/2024 16:20

Oops should say John Smyths wife above

UltraHorse · 22/12/2024 19:38

Archbishop of York kept a vicar in his job
who was a known abuser He should resign why is it ok for abusers to lead in the church but in many jobs in schools nurseries the NHS they rightly lose their job Surely the Archbishop of York will do the most decent thing and resign himself Can't he imagine how the people who were abused feel it's like claiming it's ok to abuse letting the vicar keep his job The church cares more about the abusers and the reputation of the church

UltraHorse · 22/12/2024 19:41

The archbishop of York should join Welby and resign or the church should take a stand and make him leave

UltraHorse · 11/01/2025 18:50

Definitely Yes should have followed it up being a middle class clergyman really isn't a reason or excuse

UltraHorse · 11/01/2025 18:52

He didn't do his job properly
