Petition

Update the Equality Act to make clear the characteristic “sex” is biological sex
The Government must exercise its power under s.23 of the Gender Recognition Act to modify the operation of the Equality Act 2010 by specifying the terms sex, male, female, man & woman, in the operation of that law, mean biological sex and not "sex as modified by a Gender Recognition Certificate"

More details

The Equality Act 2010 covers nine separate protected characteristics, including “Sex” & “Gender Reassignment”. This protects people against sex discrimination and discrimination because a person is transgender.

There has been much confusion about how the Equality Act and GRA interact. This has caused uncertainty and conflict for women, transgender people, and service providers. The GRA includes a provision to amend other laws to make it clear whether a GRC changes the definition of sex for that law.

One thing I don't understand is: If the EA already states sex is a protected characteristic (and it clearly does) and that gender is not listed as a protected characteristic (which it isn't), then how can they make it clearer? If companies are flouting and breaking the law, wouldn't a better petition be for the government to fine/punish companies that aren't adhering to it?

IMO it's not because it's not clear, because anyone who takes time to bother to read it will clearly see what it states as it stands. The problem is people/organisations breaking the law, as I understand it? Happy to be corrected if wrong though.

As an aside, I think it's outrageous that a birth certificate can be amended with a gender certificate. That is a complete fabrication and down and out lie.

I agree with you, and also the use of 'assigned' at birth rather than observed. I genuinely find it crazy that we allow people to think they are a man or a woman and persuade others to go along, rather than assist with genuine breaking down of stereotypes and barriers. But I know I don't have experience of gender dysphoria so that may not be enough to make people feel comfortable in their skin.

I don't have any experience of it either but that's still no excuse to change a legal document into a legal lie and something that didn't even happen. If that offends anyone reading this, well, that's just my opinion and I'm not changing it.
