There has been another tragedy local to us. The default reaction seems to always be balloon release. So harmful. They're sad their loved one died, so they're gonna inflict death elsewhere to make them feel better.
I really don't understand the mentality.
So bloody selfish.

Signed. In addition to creating litter & hurting wildlife, balloon releases can cause problems for people too.

I hate these, went for a walk in the hills last week and found a sad deflated foil balloon and white plastic string against a fence. What do people imagine happens to these after release?

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 30/01/2022 09:57

All signed and tweeted, I really hope it gets banned.

It's up to 700+ now.

Totally agree. It’s a dreadful way to remember someone who died. And on hearing that they could kill/hurt something else, the grieving person has got to be missing a few brain cells if they plough on with it.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/01/2022 11:23

Would it be worth writing to RSPB the asking them to highlight the issues?

I couldn't find anything on their website, they do have a scheme for plating a tree to celebrate a loved one's life?

Adarajames · 30/01/2022 12:26

You can an get biodegradable balloons / ribbons now, so if people really must do it, at least use those

Sadly that's not a viable alternative.

A quick google will tell some very alarming facts about biodegradable balloons. It's just a greenwash.

Signed. Very delicate but agree balloon releases are so harmful.

Perhaps restricting the sale of helium would be an easier way to achieve the same end.

megletthesecond · 30/01/2022 18:32

Signed.

I've signed so many of these over the years. Our council won't ban them. So that's bollocks to their Climate Emergency Pledge then.

That would be good too, but I suspect they would continue with Chinese lanterns, which are just as bad

On top of the rubbish littering the world from balloon releases I'm pretty sure helium is needed for MRI machines. It's totally senseless to waste it in balloons.

Fl0w3ry · 30/01/2022 21:14

I hate balloon releases too. I also don’t understand how choking some wildlife with a balloon makes bereaved people feel better. I think balloons should generally be banned. I hate all of the balloon arches people have too. It’s all plastic waste harming our planet and wildlife.

Quackpot · 30/01/2022 21:48

Totally agree

Ah damn, thought might help change people’s minds. I’m all for banging balloon releases as well, was just hoping could offer an alternative
