Banning balloon releases

There has been another tragedy local to us. The default reaction seems to always be balloon release. So harmful. They're sad their loved one died, so they're gonna inflict death elsewhere to make them feel better.
I really don't understand the mentality.
So bloody selfish.

I agree, I can understand it either.

Quackpot · 27/01/2022 14:06

It's not my petition, I searched for one before I wrote one, but I hope it gets its target. Makes me feel really sad that there's only 500 odd signatures so far, I thought more people cared. Hopefully Mumsnet will help get it bumped up to the 10,000 mark.

Yeah I've signed and shared.

I attended a relatives funeral and was shocked at the balloon release, a few of us piped up about the ecological damage but was agressively shouted down (I know emotions run, understandably, high at funerals)... about 50 of the balloons got stuck in a prominent tree line and really just showed how awful they are...

Thankyou

Yes, this is so hard when the bereaved start organising one. It's very difficult to speak up then, but I don't know why the message isn't getting through more generally

Somanysocks · 27/01/2022 16:43

Signed, hate balloon releases, there's nothing good about them.

Quackpot · 27/01/2022 17:07

Yes usually all you get is 'well we all grieve in different ways'
It's all the more difficult to speak up this time because it's a small child. Normally I do, but I can't bring myself to have a go at grieving parents. So instead I'm sharing lots of environmental awareness articles on social media this time.

Signed and shared. I hate these things and just as bad are Paper Lantern releases. It is drilled into us all our lives never to leave a candle unattended. It's an extremely well known rule. And yet people who would never leave a candle lit at home think that lighting a firefighter (that doesn't go out easily) and sending it off somewhere to set fire to whatever it lands on, is perfectly reasonable???

Don't honour lost loved ones by littering, causing death and injury to livestock and wildlife and burning down buildings. That's stupid.

Signed and shared on Facebook, thank you OP.

Signed. I will never understand either the meaningless of the gesture or the pointlessness of the destruction.

Quackpot · 27/01/2022 20:32

There's just no excuse these days. I don't understand how they can plead ignorance about it.

Signed. I don't even like static balloons - such a waste of plastic - but balloon releases enrage me nearly as much as Chinese lanterns, I was horrified the first time I came across those and can't believe they're still legal.

Agree OP, it’s bonkers, and the emotional manipulation that goes on is unacceptable. This grieving-by-balloon thing is hardly some ancient tradition. It’s very new as a thing, and there are plenty of other ways to mourn.

Totally agree.

I've signed it.

Longdistance · 27/01/2022 21:47

I’ve signed. Bloody hate these balloon releases, so damaging to the environment as well as wildlife. No need for it.

iklboo · 27/01/2022 22:10

Signed. My dad died on 23 December. I've bought some Bee Bombs of wild flower seeds to scatter instead.
