Campaign to erect a statue in Colchester to the Taylor sisters, the authors of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Hi all,

I’m writing to raise awareness of the current campaign to erect a statue in Colchester of Jane Taylor (and her sister Ann), the author of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. The statue will be life-sized and dedicated to the “children of the world” (engraved on the plinth), surrounded by children’s handprints.

This statue would recognise the outstanding contribution by the Taylor sisters in providing the world’s children with one of their best loved nursery rhymes. We need more statuary to women and children, and this ticks both boxes. It would push Colchester’s number of statues of women to 7 (8 if you take into account both sisters in this one monument).

The campaign is spearheaded by Sir Bob Russell. Colchester Borough Council has given the go ahead and its now time to raise the £75,000 needed. So far the campaign is at £9000.

If you’d like to find out more about the statue, this recent talk by Sir Bob details the lives of the Taylor sisters and the progress of the campaign, as well an image of the proposed statue.

If you’d like to contribute to the campaign, you can do so via this link:

Many thanks for raising and helping spread awareness of this great endeavour.
