As I'm sure many of you know the cost of childcare in the UK is criminal.

There is a petition to review this, please sign.

Honestly I think the cost of childcare is too cheap. Most staff are paid below the living wage and many nurseries have closed over the last two years. I think your petition need to more specific and ask for more subsidies for childcare.

TriciaMcMillan · 08/06/2021 11:16

Absolutely agree. Staff are already paid appallingly, this need to be much clearer that it is seeking greater government funding, not cutting wages of low paid staff even further.

The cost of childcare is not criminal. I support the right of childcare workers to be well paid. I also support a restructuring of childcare subsidies (& fair taxation/support for parents who care for their children at home as well).

The link says it’s to look at both funding and affordability. And specifically mentions the poor pay point.

We're moving this over to the Petitions board.

AmandaHuggenkizz · 08/06/2021 11:28

So who do you think should pay for your childcare?

This. Some people just read what they want too.

Sorry, I should have been more clear, more needs to be done by the government to support working parents.
Trust me I know first hand how crap nursery nurses get paid. I've worked in nurseries for 9 years. I've been on both ends. But how am I expected to work full time and have to pay £2000 a month to put my children in childcare, it doesn't work.

As to who should pay, the government should subsidise nurseries, they take enough of my wage each month, surely some of that should go to childcare. We are one of the only western countries that do not adequately fund nurseries.
The government give out free spaces but do not cover the full cost for nurseries so they have to make up the rest, essentially expecting nurseries to pay to have children attend.

The aim of this petition is not to put nurseries out of pocket, instead to make the government realise that they need to better support them and better fund them

So the tax-payer?

MMalarkey93 · 08/06/2021 16:40

Well yes, pretty much, a lot of my wage goes on tax and I'd rather see it pay for nursery fees than go towards big bonuses
