You could change your petition to ask that nurseries are properly funded then they won't need to do things like this in order to not run at a loss.

Suze1621 · 07/02/2020 14:16

So, you are proposing nursery workers don't get paid for bank holidays!

Redlocks28 · 07/02/2020 14:16

Do you get paid for bank holidays, @Laitan ?

MRex · 07/02/2020 14:17

They'll just have to put up fees for other times to make up the difference, seems pointless.

THAT90sBITCH · 07/02/2020 14:17

You need to see the bigger picture op

Strugglingtoquit · 07/02/2020 14:18

Agree with PP you’d be better off campaigning for proper funding of funded places.

Laitan · 07/02/2020 14:18

I am proposing that nurseries are run as a business and employers should pay nursery workers for bank holidays as part of the nursery running costs, not by charging parents. It is simply not fair because for instance contract workers do not earn over bank holiday but have to pay for child care services that have not been provided.

Everyone else gets paid for bank holidays why shouldn’t the people you trust your kids to?

Hercwasonaroll · 07/02/2020 14:19

They'll just charge more per hour to make up the shortfall.

(This petition is about as useful as the one to get companies to not raise holiday prices during school holidays)

LoudBatPerson · 07/02/2020 14:19

The nursery still has pretty much the same overheads on a bank holiday compared to any other weekday (the largest cost being staff). If they are stopped from charging for bank holiday days the bill won't go down, the overall fees will increase so this cost is still covered instead so parents will be no better off really. They might perceive themselves to be better off as they won't see a charge for that specific day, but the overall cost won't change.

This is particularly true for any nursery providing the 15 hours free childcare, as this is majorly underfunded by the government, so providers are having to make up the shortfall elsewhere as it is.

FuzzyAtmosphere · 07/02/2020 14:19

Pointless petition.

You’ll still pay for the bank holidays in the same way you still pay for the building seven days a week; the cost is just absorbed elsewhere.

Meruem · 07/02/2020 14:20

I don't have kids in nursery, nor do I get paid for bank holidays! But most employers do pay bank holidays so why shouldn't the nursery charge on those days? So you can have a "free" day off but nursery staff can't?

Your link says that staff should be paid for bank holidays from business funds, not from parents. Where do you think the business gets its money from?

Most nurseries run on very tight margins and many have gone out of business since maternity pay was extended and free nursery places for 2 and 3 year olds were introduced. I’d rather endure nurseries stay in business and staff are paid correctly.

EggbertHeartsTina · 07/02/2020 14:21

Usually the days where nurseries are closed are taken into account when devising nursery fees and spread over the whole year. I’m not explaining it very well, but basically if your (ridiculous) petition were to be implemented, your daily nursery fees would increase and you’d be paying the same anyway.

Nursery key workers don’t get paid enough as it is...

BowiesJumper · 07/02/2020 14:21

This is ridiculous, for all the reasons already stated!

80sMum · 07/02/2020 14:21

I think if your child is booked to attend the nursery every day, then unless the nursery charges for each individual session - and itemises the dates of each session on your invoices - then paying for the occasional bank holiday is just something that you have accept.

HighlandYak · 07/02/2020 14:22

proposing that nurseries are run as a business and employers should pay nursery workers for bank holidays as part of the nursery running costs, not by charging parents.
That is how you run a business though, by charging clients enough to cover business running costs.

SueEllenMishke · 07/02/2020 14:22

Don't be ridiculous.

Hoik · 07/02/2020 14:22

If you don't like the pricing structure used by your nursery then change nurseries however if they stop charging for bank holidays then the lost revenue will be recovered from elsewhere.

The UK is facing s childcare crisis. In the last year alone 6843 early years childcare providers have closed their doors, surveys have cited rising overheads, business rates, and government policies as the main reasons. For many providers staff are paid minimum wage and cuts are being made to provisions, resources, and opening hours in order to keep the business going, this does result in costs to parents having to be increased.

Funded places here pay approx £2 per hour less than the going rate. Maybe you should petition the government to fund providers properly.

Nonnymum · 07/02/2020 14:22

Isn't this unfair on nurseries? The staff still have to be paid and most nurseries. Are already struggling to get by Becaue Government funded hours are so low. Also as the nursery is a private business and you are buying a service really its up to them what their service charges just as in any other business.

Laitan · 07/02/2020 14:24

@Hercwasonaroll, do you suppose you could engage in a conversation without being verbally abusive?

What a stupid petition!

xyzandabc · 07/02/2020 14:26

Do you say the nursery business should pay the staff for bank holiday.
Where does the business get it's money from??
The parents!

Doesn't matter if they call it bank holiday pay or just up their hourly rate, the parents will still end up paying the same amount if the staff get paid the same amount.

Willow2017 · 07/02/2020 14:26

Maybe start a petition to tell the Government to ring fence the 'free childcare' money they give councils?
The councils can use it however they like so pay nurseries a pittance and use the rest to cover their other expenses.
Nurseries are goin out of business because they cannot afford to run on what they get for 'free childcare'.
Parents get free childcare, nurseries have to make up the difference themselves, they are not allowed to actually charge more for free places.
Maybe think about how they can pay staff decent wages never mind bank holidays, pay the rent and utilities (which they still have to pay for bank holidays if they are shut), maintenance, paying extra for waste removal, insurances, training for staff (some compulsory) equipment, outings, food, and 101 other things when their income is being severely reduced by the government who is bragging about 'free childcare' being a fabulous thing they have introduced?

Maybe when there are feck all nurseries left people will think they should have supported them a bit more?
