The use of Automated Facial Recognition technology (AFR) concerns me for two key reasons. Firstly, research based on trials of AFR in areas such as London and South Wales has shown that current AFR technology has a considerably low success rate in “flagging” potential criminals.
Significantly, current AFR technology is far more likely to incorrectly flag people from ethnic minorities as potential criminals than those from White backgrounds, and as such current AFR technology will lead to a relative increase in police stop and searches among those from minority backgrounds. I believe it is clear to see that the use of AFR for this reason will only increase a perception of racial profiling among the police, further contributing to a sense of public distrust in law enforcement bodies.
