My friend was killed and didn't get justice. Will mumsnetters help to stop it happening to someone else?

In 2015, nearly 5000 people were killed of seriously injured in hit and runs in London alone.

This number is on the rise. Leaving a fatal accident scene benefits the perpetrator as if they are caught they face a much lesser sentence of Leaving the Scene rather than Death by Dangerous Driving.

My friend was one of those killed and his family are trying to change the law so that leaving the scene of fatal hit and runs is a comparable offence and remove the once incentive to drive away. He was left to die in the road aged 36 and the man who killed him served just 61 days in prison.

This crime can happen to anyone of us. Children have been killed in hit and runs. Elderly people have too.

Children have been left without a mother or a father because of this crime.
For those who callously drive away and leaving someone dying in the road to get a sentence of days or weeks it's vile.

Imagine how you'd feel if this happened to a loved one? I really hope it never happens to anyone reading but it could.

Please help change this law so that justice can be done for victims and their families.* *
We're trying to get to 10000 signatures by 20th June on this petition petition.parliament.uk/petitions/208008

Please help Mumsnet, for all the victims, past and future of this cowardly and devastating crime.

Or alternatively, if you have seen this already and not signed / shared please could you help me understand why?
Because it is an unspeakable pain to know a loved one died alone an in in pain at the roadside because the driver fled the scene instead of calling for help.

Better sentencing wouldn’t bring our loved ones back, but it might mean a driver thinks twice before fleeing the scene without calling for an ambulance, and that could save lives. Perhaps the life of someone you love.

I know its the law to stay at the scene of an accident but, why bother if you stay at the scene and you have caused a death by dangerous of careless driving that could be potentally years in prison + a driving ban but if you leave the scene of the crime the only thing you will get charged with is leaving the scene of the accident which carries much lower sentences.

Why cannot it by like drink driving were you refuse to give blood / give a breath sample you are found guilty of drink driving anyway. Why is not leaving the scene of the accident the same sentence as dangerous driving? Since they are both practically the same (Refuse you cannot prove i am drunk = so refusing = automatically guilty, were as leaving the scene of crime cannot prove you were driving dangerous , only charge you with a minor offense (Lets not get me started on the owner of the car not saying who was driving so no one can get prosecuted, aka why is not the owner prosecuted as they obviously know who was driving and are perverting the course of justice)

Waddlelikeapenguin · 17/06/2018 00:17

Yes worridmum i think most of us assumed the law was far better than it is Sad

I'm not in the UK, or I absolutely would. I'm pretty sure it's an offense everywhere else I've lived.
