My friend was killed and didn't get justice. Will mumsnetters help to stop it happening to someone else?

In 2015, nearly 5000 people were killed of seriously injured in hit and runs in London alone.

This number is on the rise. Leaving a fatal accident scene benefits the perpetrator as if they are caught they face a much lesser sentence of Leaving the Scene rather than Death by Dangerous Driving.

My friend was one of those killed and his family are trying to change the law so that leaving the scene of fatal hit and runs is a comparable offence and remove the once incentive to drive away. He was left to die in the road aged 36 and the man who killed him served just 61 days in prison.

This crime can happen to anyone of us. Children have been killed in hit and runs. Elderly people have too.

Children have been left without a mother or a father because of this crime.
For those who callously drive away and leaving someone dying in the road to get a sentence of days or weeks it's vile.

Imagine how you'd feel if this happened to a loved one? I really hope it never happens to anyone reading but it could.

Please help change this law so that justice can be done for victims and their families.* *
We're trying to get to 10000 signatures by 20th June on this petition petition.parliament.uk/petitions/208008

Please help Mumsnet, for all the victims, past and future of this cowardly and devastating crime.

Done.
If they were properly charged with something like Manslaughter if found to be drunk/dangerous driving/no license, maybe people would drive more carefully, and think first.

Signed. Good luck and thanks for highlighting this. It’s awful.

there will be more banging on for a few days - but sign and share and it will stop sooner.

I have no doubt there are some hit and run drivers using mumsnet who would object to a law change.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 16/06/2018 20:44

As an aside op murder is very easy to commit, people don't realise until it happens to them, esp with vulnerable people - those with LD or the elderly.

People criticising us for “banging on” about it. We are talking about people not being punished for leaving someone they hit to die.

Far more trivial petitions seem to get thousands of signatures in days. So those of us who have lost loved ones to hit and run drivers - who fled and left them dying at the roadside and didn’t call for help- are pretty devastated that this one hasn’t taken off.

DaisyDreaming · 16/06/2018 21:02

My loved one was hit, the driver stopped and called the police but my loved one thinks there was a witness who drove off (leaving him in the road). The police didn’t prosecute as there was no witness, I don’t believe the driver was at the correct speed or paging attention but it couldn’t be proved as it was only her word. With a miracle and 2 months in intensive care my loved on survived. I can’t believe it benefits drivers to drive off. I wish also they prosecute for life changing accidents, the physical cost to my family was around £30,000, no words for the emotional. The police lost all interest once he was out of the coma

Fortheloveofscience · 16/06/2018 21:02

Just caught this - signed and shared on Facebook, the current law is a travesty I’m so sorry for your loss.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/06/2018 21:32

I have been bumping all the threads about this-I genuinely cannot believe we can't get it to 10,000

It almost beggars belief that this happens-
still hoping we can make a change- can not imagine how I'd feel if it was my loved one denied justice...

Redcrayons · 16/06/2018 21:33

Already signed after your last thread. Good luck.
