Fund baby hatches to allow newborns to be left safely and anonymously

There have been several cases of newborn babies being abandoned. Most recently and sadly was the case of baby Pearl in Rochdale, Manchester who was found dead in the woods. Many countries have baby hatches to allow babies to be abandoned safely, where they can receive immediate attention.

Belgium, Germany and Canada have introduced baby hatches where a parent can abandon their newborn baby anonymously. This means that despite this desperate act, the infant is safe and warm and an alert is generated so that someone arrives to care for the child straight away. This is scheme is needed in the UK to ensure that these parents have a safe space to leave their child and do not have to resort to leaving the infant at risk.

The news story about Pearl can be found here

Signed, but Pearl's mother obviously wanted her baby to die, sadly.

I studied this at law school - I can't remember why it hasn't worked in trials; but it has definitely been debated before.

I think it'd take a very big education piece to get people to even consider using them - as a nation; we tend to leave babies places they won't be found - and at the moment, I doubt you'd convince anyone that they wouldn't be tracked down. Trust in the government is at a low.

While the idea is good; the mother of baby Pearl didn't want her to be found. Sadly that's not an exception.

(I have signed it though - it just needs some thought into how it's implemented so that it works!)

Thanks everyone. Yes AnchorDownDeepBreath I agree it would need to be carefully implemented, and hopefully the example of other countries could be used as it has saved lives.
