To find myself actually agreeing with something Katie Hopkins said?

Ok. Got your attention! Have no idea of anything she has said recently but it is most unlikely I would agree.

Now, please read on: at the moment if someone has been drink driving and is involved in a serious accident it is incredibly tempting for them to flee the scene and many do. Please read this petition, started by the family member of someone left to die by the roadside in a hit and run
a mumsnetter linked to it and has been trying to get interest in it .... please consider signing and sharing so we can at least get this to the 10000 mark and get a government response.

My first boyfriend died by the roadside after a hit and run, not instantly but before an ambulance could reach him. I hate thinking what pain he must have suffered.

Hopefully it tips over 5000 tonight

if the maximum sentence is increased the judge has discretion, at the moment those who are evading drunk driving charges get away with it.

NeverTwerkNaked · 04/04/2018 21:55

Exactly already . One would expect the judge to take into consideration all the circumstances. But there can be very few defences to making the decision (however panicked) to leave someone to die instead of seeking help for them

for every case of true panic there must be several hundred who know exactly what they are doing.

Signed. Because I agree with the cause and also dislike the moaners who moan about such posts 🤣

adunno · 04/04/2018 22:17

I’m pretty shocked at how low this is.

alreadytaken · 04/04/2018 22:20

me too - but everyone is getting worked up about the burglar. Seems criminals attract more interest than victims

I think that punishiing someone for panic is not right.

If somebody chooses to drive, they commit to doing so responsibly. If they are going to 'panic' and drive off leaving an injured person without medical care and try to hide from the law, then they shouldn't have got behind the wheel in the first place. Driving is not a right, you should only drive if you are willing to accept the responsibility of acting within the law and being punished if you don't.

MariaFranco · 04/04/2018 22:57

Signed.

NeverTwerkNaked · 04/04/2018 22:59

hopelessly - that’s my thoughts about driving. It’s why I didn’t even learn to drive for over a decade after my boyfriend was killed. The enormous responsibility of being in charge of a machine with the potential to kill. Every time we get behind the wheel we should be aware of that.

My dad taught me to drive the summer before I was 17 (not on a road) to teach me how to make a car move etc.

Before I even turned the engine on he said "never forget that in the wrong hands, a car can be deadlier than a gun"

I've never forgotten that, 20 years later.

My 9 YO DS was knocked off his bike by a hit and run driver.... 3 years later we are still dealing with the fallout of him thinking he could have been left to die beside the road. Thankfully a following driver forced the driver to stop and someone putting their bin out called the ambulance.

I didn't look at the original thread because I assumed I was going to be the usual bunfight of "well because he was cycling on the road & once saw a cyclist jump a red light so of course the motorist is well within his rights to knock him off and kill him." Type of posts I tend to avoid those threads for obvious reasons.

I have signed and shared on Facebook and Twitter.

NeverTwerkNaked · 05/04/2018 07:44

@unescorted I am so so sorry to read that. Your poor son, what an unbearable thing to deal with in childhood.

You’ve found your home here, between this thread and the other I have been comforted how many of us know and understand the immense responsibility that comes with being in control of a killing machine.

shared it on Facebook, sent it to some organisations that help victims.

I was outside a school once when a car hit a child (fortunately slow motion so no serious damage). The car attempted to drive off and was stopped by parents getting in front and banging on the bonnet. The police spoke to the parents about possible criminal damage!
