Ok. Got your attention! Have no idea of anything she has said recently but it is most unlikely I would agree.

Now, please read on: at the moment if someone has been drink driving and is involved in a serious accident it is incredibly tempting for them to flee the scene and many do. Please read this petition, started by the family member of someone left to die by the roadside in a hit and run
a mumsnetter linked to it and has been trying to get interest in it .... please consider signing and sharing so we can at least get this to the 10000 mark and get a government response.

My first boyfriend died by the roadside after a hit and run, not instantly but before an ambulance could reach him. I hate thinking what pain he must have suffered.

Morning steak Smile
I’m starting to feel cautiously optimistic this could get to 10,000.
I really do believe it needs legislative change. So many devastating stories on this thread and the other one

Katie Hopkins rarely says anything I disagree with and yes, I`ll sign

Gwenhwyfar · 04/04/2018 08:11

I don't like being deceived. Won't sign.

NeverTwerkNaked · 04/04/2018 08:26

That’s fair enough gwen I wouldn’t expect anyone to sign unless they believed it was something they felt the government should look at.

I’m sorry if you feel deceived.

That's a shame you feel that way Gwen. Thanks for the bump though

I think that punishiing someone for panic is not right. I'm saying this as a mother of dd with brain damage from texting drivers.

I'm sorry for your loss but destroying 2 lives is wrong. I also often see people walking along the roadway in road colored clothes. If someone accidentally hit them and panicked, with a law in place to automatically punish them, there could be all sorts of injustice.

NeverTwerkNaked · 04/04/2018 17:33

But shouldn’t they at least call for help? It seems to me they compound the crime if they don’t call for help for the victim

OP posts:
NeverTwerkNaked · 04/04/2018 17:34

Ps. So sorry for everything you and your DD must have been through

And maybe there needs to be an education campaign so that people realise that the consequences will be minimal if it was a genuine accident (ie no dangerous driving) and /or the pedestrian was actually at fault.

Panic is one thing. But even if someone panicked at the scene, anyone with half a conscience would go to the police themselves a few hours later or in the following day or two. Especially in the case of a fatality (which is what this petition is asking for - leaving the scene in the case of a fatality) when local and sometimes national media are used to appeal for witnesses.

In Andy's case, the driver hid his van. Hid it. And then never came forward or said a word for two weeks. That's not the actions of a man who panicked. That's the actions of a coward. He's never shown any remorse for what he did and that is a tale that's repeated over and over, as the stories on this and the other thread have shown.

And this crimes don't destroy one life, or even two if you count the driver. It destroys hundreds of lives.
Andy was loved by his family. He had hundreds of friends around the world because he was a lovely guy and he was loved by them all.
All of those people are devastated by his death.
And the same is true for the thousands of people run down in hit and runs all over the world.
The emotional cost of these crimes is incalculable.

Bump bump

NeverTwerkNaked · 04/04/2018 19:57

Totally agree steak. Hiding, instead of seeking help for the victim, compounds the awfulness.

Clever title!
I signed!

forgettingnames · 04/04/2018 20:03

Sorry Abby, but if someone was panicking and not stopping, they were panicking for themselves, not the person they hit.
Sometimes your duty to others has to override your self interest.

NeverTwerkNaked · 04/04/2018 20:26

Exactly forgetting . The driver at fault may be panicking but the victim is undoubtedly in serious pain and terrified, fighting for their life and every minute counts. The law should put much more pressure on drivers to do the “right thing” and stop and seek help
