AIBU to think that 61 days in prison for killing someone is an insult?

Steaksauce · 21/02/2018 18:59

In December 2016, a friend of mine, Andy Lindup was run over and left to die in the road by the man who hit him. He was 36.

The person responsible hid his van with its broken windscreen caused when he hit my friend and kept it to himself for a fortnight until he was traced by police.

Because he left the scene, that's all he could be charged with as other evidence (drinking for example) couldn't be proven.
As a result, he was given 4 months in prison and served only 61 days. For taking a life.

Andy's family are campaigning to get the law changed so that leaving the scene carries the same sentence as death by dangerous driving. The way the law is at the moment, there is almost an incentive to drive away.

The petition is here petition.parliament.uk/petitions/208008

And some more detail about the case and the campaign from Andy's dad here: eveshamobserver.co.uk/news/hit-and-run-family-in-sentence-review-call/

Please sign the petition, this crime is tragically so common and devastates so many lives and the sentences given out are a joke and an insult to grieving families.
It's not the judges and the police at fault, the man who killed Andy was given the maximum sentence for that charge, it's the law that's wrong.

Thank you for reading and for signing and feel free to share on Facebook/Twitter/anywhere else to help raise the profile of this campaign.

Judges hate the restrictions imposed on them for death by dangerous driving sentences and will often allude to this in their summing up so I think a change in law will be welcomed all round!

signed. i think death by dangerous driving needs to hold a much bigger sentence, but also i think failing to stop/hide the car etc should penalise them even more than the ones who do stop. so the sentences alone need to be increased but also if they dont stop then that should hold an even bigger sentence

24 hours in police custody is covering this atm.
Channel 4.

Steaksauce · 26/02/2018 21:59

Yes I'm watching.

Driving down a pavement at speed at people, hitting someone and then reversing back over them isn't attempted murder apparently Hmm

Gbh? What an insult to that poor man.

It is disgusting.
I feel sorry for the police tbh.
Just switched over to the news and they are talking about the drunk driver who killed those 3 boys.
They should be locked up for life.
Drunk drivers should have their licence taken away and their car crushed.

Sorry for your loss. That sentence is a slap in the face, I've known people who've gone to jail for significantly longer for non-violent offences yet someone can commit manslaughter and do 2 months. Angry

Husband signed it, I'm not a UK citizen so I can't, but I can share it with others.

I know of a similar case in my local area, a man left to die alone on the road because the driver + companions had been drinking and they drove off and left him there .
I have signed and i will share on my facebook .

It should be an automatic charge of murder if you hit and run and the police can’t get the evidence. There is no reason to leave the scene unless you have something to hide.
Signed and hope the laws are tightened up on this.
Sorry for your loss.
