AIBU to think that 61 days in prison for killing someone is an insult?

Steaksauce · 21/02/2018 18:59

In December 2016, a friend of mine, Andy Lindup was run over and left to die in the road by the man who hit him. He was 36.

The person responsible hid his van with its broken windscreen caused when he hit my friend and kept it to himself for a fortnight until he was traced by police.

Because he left the scene, that's all he could be charged with as other evidence (drinking for example) couldn't be proven.
As a result, he was given 4 months in prison and served only 61 days. For taking a life.

Andy's family are campaigning to get the law changed so that leaving the scene carries the same sentence as death by dangerous driving. The way the law is at the moment, there is almost an incentive to drive away.

The petition is here petition.parliament.uk/petitions/208008

And some more detail about the case and the campaign from Andy's dad here: eveshamobserver.co.uk/news/hit-and-run-family-in-sentence-review-call/

Please sign the petition, this crime is tragically so common and devastates so many lives and the sentences given out are a joke and an insult to grieving families.
It's not the judges and the police at fault, the man who killed Andy was given the maximum sentence for that charge, it's the law that's wrong.

Thank you for reading and for signing and feel free to share on Facebook/Twitter/anywhere else to help raise the profile of this campaign.

Sadly unless the person is caught at the scene of the crime behind the wheel thry can quite easi;y get away with it my school friend was hit by a car the female driver was caught on CCTV but because it could not identify her exactly (shared car between a number of related females all looking very very similar to the driver) they got away with not even stopping as of course the driver of the car did not come forward and the others at the time all denied knowing who was driving (you cannot arrist the owner of the car and charge them so no way to force people to tell who was driving ethier)

And the bastards still boost about in the local village pub getting of Scot free because English law is so soft... apparently in their home country it would not be the case as the family would have to pay blood and or the owner would be sentenced etc

endofthelinefinally · 24/02/2018 00:30

Signed.
The law is way too lax on dangerous drivers.
The idiot who injured my dd, wrote off her car, then got out and hurled abuse at her while she was trapped in the car wasnt even arrested.
He then went into a pub a few yards away, while a member if the public was helping the police get the car door open. He had a drink, so they didnt even breathalise him.
Unbelievable.
Thankfully she wasnt killed, but she could have been.
I am so sorry for those who have lost loved ones.

Signed.
How can someone just leave a person to die. It's horrific.
I am so sorry to you all for the loss of Andy.Flowers

Hopefully one day people will stop making these stupid decisions that ruin so many lives. So sad Sad

Signed, but saddened that this has got a tiny number of signatures vs the one asking for it to be compulsory to stop and report hitting a cat. We have our priorities all wrong.

isitfridayyet1 · 24/02/2018 01:05

Signed - hope the Uk government listens as its

appallingly low sentencing for such a crime.

Signed so has DH.

Unbelievable this is allowed to happen, just hiding his van for 2 weeks after a hit and run should surely carry 6 years never mind everything else.

So sorry for your loss OP.

NurseryFightClub · 24/02/2018 06:26

Signed, a car can be a weapon in the wrong hands. And this sends the message that leaving scene and drunk driving is almost acceptable.

AddictedToTea · 24/02/2018 07:22

I signed. Feel so sad for that family, on top of the tragedy of losing a son / brother they have to face the insult of this sentence. Heartbreaking.
