AIBU to think that 61 days in prison for killing someone is an insult?

In December 2016, a friend of mine, Andy Lindup was run over and left to die in the road by the man who hit him. He was 36.

The person responsible hid his van with its broken windscreen caused when he hit my friend and kept it to himself for a fortnight until he was traced by police.

Because he left the scene, that's all he could be charged with as other evidence (drinking for example) couldn't be proven.
As a result, he was given 4 months in prison and served only 61 days. For taking a life.

Andy's family are campaigning to get the law changed so that leaving the scene carries the same sentence as death by dangerous driving. The way the law is at the moment, there is almost an incentive to drive away.

The petition is here petition.parliament.uk/petitions/208008

And some more detail about the case and the campaign from Andy's dad here: eveshamobserver.co.uk/news/hit-and-run-family-in-sentence-review-call/

Please sign the petition, this crime is tragically so common and devastates so many lives and the sentences given out are a joke and an insult to grieving families.
It's not the judges and the police at fault, the man who killed Andy was given the maximum sentence for that charge, it's the law that's wrong.

Thank you for reading and for signing and feel free to share on Facebook/Twitter/anywhere else to help raise the profile of this campaign.

Bump!

shakeyourcaboose · 23/02/2018 13:29

Having seen the horrific incident of hit and run in Coventry yesterday by drunk driver resulting in death of two children I am more enraged and distraught than before. can we not ask @MNHQ to promote this more?

mumofmunchkin · 23/02/2018 13:46

Signed.

My brother was killed in a collision with a car while out cycling two years ago. This makes me feel "lucky" that the bastard was arrested at the scene and is currently serving 4.5 years for death by dangerous driving. Even that is nothing in comparison to what he did.

StoatofDisarray · 23/02/2018 13:49

Signed. So sorry about Andy.

shakeyourcaboose · 23/02/2018 13:50

@mumofmunchkin am so sorry for the loss of your brother. It's bloody tragic that you feel any form of 'luck' in this situation.

MimsyBorogroves · 23/02/2018 13:53

I'll sign. There is a boy local to me who has had his life destroyed by a hit and run drunk driver. He was cycling home after work, intoxicated man ran him over, then fled the scene, driving across country after a change of clothes to get the car fixed.

The boy spent a year in a critical condition and is now home, but has missed out on what he wanted to achieve from his life as he won't be able to go to university or live independently.

These sentences are an absolute joke.

Signed. This makes me so angry. Unfortunately, from bitter personal experience, nothing surprises me about our so-called justice system. Thoughts and love go out to all those affected by this x

JammieDodgepot · 23/02/2018 19:09

Signed. I'm so sorry this happened.

I’m so sorry for the loss of Andy, all of his friends and family. I have signed.

MinorRSole · 23/02/2018 19:30

Signed, the sentences given are a disgrace. I've no time at all for drink drivers and even less for people who leave the scene of the crime. I was angered enough when someone hit my cat and left him, some people have no decency. He's not going to learn any in 61 days either Angry

Signed.I see today two brothers aged 2 and 6 have been killed by a hit and run driver. All day long it's been on my mind, the devastation for the family but also the derisory sentence that will be given if they do find the driver. So sorry for your loss.

mumofmunchkin I'm sorry about your brother.

agbnb · 23/02/2018 20:07

is it possible for MNHQ to promote this? How could we feed it back for them to consider? Maybe report the thread (I'm not sure how it works)

I am so sorry about your friend, the driving ban and prison sentence are far too lenient.

Meant to say that EVERY SINGLE DAY I see people driving whilst holding their phones (I live in the states where it is still more socially acceptable although illegal in this state at least)

It makes me so bloody angry!!!!!
