The sentence for hit and run drivers MUST be increased. 61 days in prison for killing someone isn't justice!

The link to the petition is at the bottom of this article
eveshamobserver.co.uk/news/hit-and-run-family-in-sentence-review-call/

The victim of this crime was a friend of mine. He was killed aged 36 and left to die in the street by the person who hit him. That person ditched his vehicle and by the time he was caught (over 2 weeks later), it was too late to get any evidence of drink driving, speeding etc. They do know that he never even tried to brake before or after hitting my friend.
Beause of this, he was only charged with leaving the scene of an accident and therefore only served 61 days in prison. For taking a life.

The victims family are trying to get this loophole in the law changed as they feel there is almost an incentive to leave an accident as you're almost certain to get a lesser sentence than the maximum of 14 years for death by dangerous driving (which he would have been charged with had he stayed)

Please sign so this gets considered by parliament. This is the sort of crime that could happen to anyone and, sadly, is likely to happen again, devastating another family.

Thanks for reading.

Bodicea · 09/02/2018 06:53

Signed. This happened in my village to a young boy. Driver presented himself the next day. Too late to bresthalise him.

Steaksauce · 09/02/2018 08:25

There's currently 2934 signatures so still a long way to go.

@Bodicea that's so sad Sad that poor boy and his family.
And yeah, presenting the next day isn't good enough! People are getting away with killing people with just a slap in the wrist because of his loophole in the law, it's not right.

Up again

Is it worth asking for the thread to be moved from Chat so it doesn't disappear after 90 days? Getting to the required number may take time but we can keep publicising it then and looking for support.

I'm so sorry to hear about this- he looked like a really lovely man.

BitOfFun · 09/02/2018 15:34

Steaksauce, perhaps you could ask MNHQ to change the title of this thread to something like "People who flee the scene of an accident..."?

I just feel that more MNers would open the thread, instead of assuming it's one of those daft "Vote for my baby"'-type competition things? Just a suggestion x

JE17 · 09/02/2018 15:53

I hope the law will be reviewed.
Signed.

Floralnomad · 09/02/2018 16:16

Bumping this again , I agree with pp it needs a better title to get people opening this thread .

BitOfFun · 09/02/2018 17:47

Yes, it would be a shame if people avoided the thread because of how it was worded.

Butterymuffin · 09/02/2018 18:27

If you click the three dots and report one of your own posts, OP, you can ask that way for it to be moved. Not sure where is best - In the News, maybe, since the first post links to a news report?

Steaksauce · 09/02/2018 21:47

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I'll report it and get it moved and ask them to change the thread title
