Women sentenced to rape as punishment for their brother's actions - petition

I hope this is ok to post... You've probably seen on the news that 2 sisters in India have been sentenced to rape by the village elders, and to being paraded naked through the streets. This is as punishment for their brother's crime (of running off with a married woman).

Please sign Amnesty International's petition to the Indian government to help this family, who are now in exile.

Fuck. Is that even real?

Evil bastards.

NotAWhaleOmeletteInSight · 02/09/2015 22:23

It's unbelievable but sadly yes it's real. I've been reading about it and apparently these village elder councils can be very powerful even though they're unelected.

The family's home has been ransacked too

I thought I read that there had then been an action to arrest the men that ordered this. Disgraceful.

AliceInUnderpants · 02/09/2015 22:30

signed.

Disgraceful that anyone should be sentenced to rape. I heard that they escaped the village, but how many of these are going undetected. Instead of giving money to India for space travel it should be used to stop these illegal courts.

HippyDippyRidingPretty · 03/09/2015 07:25

Signed.

TheHoneyBadger · 03/09/2015 07:27

classic women as property stuff - he ran off with someone else's property re: wife so the men get access to his property re: sisters. awfully indicative of the status of women there.

signed and shared.

NotAWhaleOmeletteInSight · 03/09/2015 08:40

It's disgraceful and yes you're right, it's the women as property thing. They're also from the lowest caste. Awful.

My ds read this on the internet last week and it upset us all so much.

Barbaric bastards a just want an excuse to rape.

Personally I think the British government should withhold aid until this type of barbaric bollocks is eradicated in any country we send aid too.

Signed.

BadLad · 04/09/2015 11:14

Who on earth are they expecting to carry out the rape if it goes ahead? The "judges" themselves?

TheHoneyBadger · 04/09/2015 13:46

the village elders who were also likely also the judges and decided they would get to rape the guys sisters. delightful eh?

and so socially acceptable seemingly that they're not worried about announcing to all that they are rapists and chose to 'reward' themselves with the raping of young girls as one of hte perks of their position.

mijas99 · 04/09/2015 14:06

Hellocampers

Erm, rape is pretty much institutionalised in the UK as well you know

The BBC, the policeforce, local authority children's homes scandals,

The Barbaric bastards. There should be a trade embargo with the UK until they get their house in order

tbtc20 · 04/09/2015 14:11

Petition is here

givemushypeasachance · 04/09/2015 14:22

The BBC news website had an article on this earlier in the week - there isn't actually any firm evidence that this took place, the local police have been investigating and haven't found any proof of a village council meeting even being held. Amnesty have based their petition on the allegations by one of the women, but it hasn't been substantiated as yet. That's not to say it's not true and horrific of course, but knee-jerk condemnation of the whole country on the basis of an unsubstantiated allegation is a bit much. If it did happen then it's just as illegal in India as it would be here.
