I own horses and ride, it doesn't mean I have to ride roughshod over somebody else's land in pursuit of a fox. Many farmers are part of toll ride schemes, which is where I'd be putting my money.

I also disagree that hunters are just along for the ride, it is promoting a method of culling that many find unacceptable, and just because someone is against hunting it doesn't follow that they will eat factory farmed meat all the time; they are more likely interested in welfare standards and humane slaughter imo. I don't see why they should prioritise one over the other when both are likely important issues to them.

MistressMerryWeather · 11/07/2015 18:53

You tell 'em Fennel. :o

mammabmamma · 11/07/2015 18:58

Just incase we didn't hear the first time hey Fenneltea

If it really is about pest control (my arse) then it needs to be handled through local council professionals like any other serious pest problem.

There is absolutely no need for hunts. None at all.

Pest control is just a pathetic excuse.

AllThePrettySeahorses · 11/07/2015 19:22

I think it's a backwards step to bring hunting back. It was a progressive and popular move back in the day and a positive step for animal welfare (come on, do you really think chasing foxes with dogs is humane? If you like it, admit it, fine, but it isn't humane).

What bothers me more, though, is that we're in a time of austerity and there's no money, blah, blah, blah - surely there are far more important things to debate in parliament and better things to spend the money on that changing the act would cost? What a waste of time and taxes.

pinkfrocks · 11/07/2015 20:20

local council professionals - don't make me laugh! How exactly would they catch them? Sit with a gun all day and night by chicken runs? And another expenditure to come out of council tax.

I assume many posters who are anti hunting are townies who have no idea at all about the devastation that foxes cause.

Think about the way animals are raised for food if you eat meat, before you get all worked up over a few foxes who are a genuine menace to farmers.

If you think they are not a pest then you are wrong. very wrong.

pinkfrocks · 11/07/2015 20:27

Overturning the ban on hunting is nothing to do with animal welfare- it's about inverted snobbery, jealousy over a way of life, and mis-conceptions.
If you think it is inhumane , then start thinking about the lives of the battery farmed chickens you eat, pigs kept tethered in stalls and so forth.
This is far more cruel as is the way that many animals are transported for slaughter.
There is no 'right' way to kill an animal but a hound will go for the neck and the death will be quick- no different to what happens to animals at the slaughter house who have been subject to emotional stress on journeys to the slaughter house- far worse. At least a fox is in its natural environment - and foxes are killers too- don't forget that.
But tuck into your mass produced sausages and burgers, and just turn a blind eye to all that.

MistressMerryWeather · 11/07/2015 20:51

Jealousy over a way of life? Could you explain what you mean?

As for foxes being killers, what does that have to do with the unnecessary actions of humans? Also there is nothing natural about a fox being hunted by a bunch of hounds.

I'm not going to comment on the over played, straw man sausage arguments as it has nothing to do with what we are discussing.

At the end of the day it's not bloody down to you to control the fox population. It's just an excuse.

AllThePrettySeahorses · 12/07/2015 07:26

You can't justify hunting by saying that the farming industry is worse. It may well be, but that doesn't make hunting with dogs okay. It's like justifying beating dogs with sticks for shits and giggles because they're sometimes skinned alive for meat. One being crueller doesn't mean its acceptable to carry out the other.

Do you eat meat, by the way? I don't, and haven't for nearly 30 years, but I disagree with the inference that someone who eats meat is a hypocrite for being anti foxhunting. Subtle nuances of human nature and all that, plus it's impossible for one person to fix everything so they have to pick their causes to support.

pinkfrocks · 12/07/2015 08:01

This just shows your ignorance.

I live in the country and see the effects of foxes.

People keep insisting foxes are cute fluffy animals who aren't a nuisance.

Dogs killing a fox is actually quicker and more humane than the other options which would be men with rifles, often wounding the animal, not killing it outright, and then it would have a slow death,, usually by starving.
