So if cameron wants to change the law about "hunting foxes", then that means I can round up "criminal scum who beat up/kill defenceless old people for a few quid" and hunt them down, using "chavvy" mutts then?

No? Answer me this then...is a fox worth more for keeping down vermin than criminal scum who preys on OAPs ?

BuriedSardine · 10/05/2015 04:13

Quite frankly there are far bigger issues in the world you could all be signing petitions and getting your knickers in a twist over

Hear, hear.

JoanHickson · 10/05/2015 04:16

What does it matter if op is passionate about a fox or about Human rights? it's op's area of interest and they are looking for like minded people.

DoraGora · 10/05/2015 07:28

I like it. I like it.

Coming fox hunting?
No, dog fighting, then badger baiting, me.
That's barbaric. That's illegal. I'm against it, totally.
OK, then. I'll come fox hunting. Sucker for a moral argument, me.

Scoobydoo8 · 11/07/2015 14:39

Would I want to be torn apart by a pack of hounds or tortured and eaten alive?

Hmmmmmmm, pack of hounds for me.

But the 275 million small mammals and birds killed and tortured by domestic cats a year don't have a say!

If you want to save wild animals fight to reduce the numbers of cats!

The hypocrisy on these threads is laughable. A handful of foxes causes all this angst , millions of animals nada!

MistressMerryWeather · 11/07/2015 14:50

Ah, this is one of those subjects where some people are unable to grasp the fact that a person can care about many things all at once.

SwedishEdith · 11/07/2015 15:02

My tory mp has already tweeted that she favours the ban. At least, I think that's what she means - it's the most convoluted way of saying it I've ever read. She clearly believes you must use all 140 characters per tweet.

Icimoi · 11/07/2015 15:13

Scoobydoo, the point is that it's not an either/or between foxes and cats, is it?

There is also a distinct difference between a cat following its hunting instinct, and people dressing up in red coats and chasing a fox with hounds till it's caught and torn to death purely for fun.

Icimoi · 11/07/2015 15:14

OP, link doesn't work for me - it leads to a petition that we can't sign because it's closed.

fenneltea · 11/07/2015 15:17

I've signed, and I'm also a chicken/sheep keeper that manages to co-exist with foxes with no problems. In fact they do a great job of keeping the rabbit population down.

How anyone can justify chasing a fox to an unpleasant end (and no their necks aren't broken by the hounds, there are plenty ripped to pieces) and call themselves humanely controlling a species is beyond me.

Not to mention that many hounds will also be shot when they are no good for hunting, plus the animals that are caught in the way of the pack and ripped apart.

As for hunting them because they hunt other species, I'm afraid they have to eat, they have no concept of revenge, but understand fear and pain and why would anyone be happy to inflict that on another creature?

Cats do hunt, but they are also valuable for vermin control and I believe the RSPB has stated that cats are unlikely to have a detrimental impact on bird populations.

No, I'm afraid that humans are by far the cruelest species intentionally.

You obviously haven't met my cat. He couldn't catch a bird if it was wingless and made out of bacon.

Ps. I'm with you OP. Leave the bloody things alone for the love of feck.

I also care about other stuff in the world in addition to this.

Twinkie1 · 11/07/2015 15:27

Oooohhhh those poor little defenceless fluffy creatures (chickens I'm talking about not foxes by the way, when they get into a coop and kill tens of them for fun!!)

Country fixes are merciless killers and urban fixed are mangy disease spreading vermin.

MistressMerryWeather · 11/07/2015 15:31

The whole population control stuff is a bunch of wankerage. Anyone who believes that is either in total denial or thick as pig shit.

The problem is that people are doing this for fun. For sport.

Fox hunting is no different than pit bull fighting. Can you imagine if people tried to get that legalised? Hah. The government wouldn't even look at it.

But because fox hunting is something that the rich and powerful enjoy the rules change.

MistressMerryWeather · 11/07/2015 15:34

Merciless killers.

Christ alive.

Everythingsgonegreen · 11/07/2015 15:57

Wish he would do something about the humans who leave trash and rubbish where it shouldn't be.....thus allowing the fox population to swell .

schloss · 11/07/2015 16:02

It is only an amendment to the existing legislation to bring the law in line with Scotland.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 11/07/2015 16:06

But the 275 million small mammals and birds killed and tortured by domestic cats a year don't have a say!

But that's cats behaving according to nature. I don't like it when my cat does that - even though I'm quite glad if he's keeping the local mouse/rat population out of my house. But I'd be a fucking weirdo, and not very well regarded around my neighbourhood, if I put on a special coat and hat and followed him round the streets hallooh-ing and trumpeting while he did it, starting the day with a nip of whisky and making everyone call me Mistress....

chantico · 11/07/2015 16:17

Hang on.

Isn't the proposed change in English law making it the same as the law in Scotland?

What does SNP say about it?

pinkfrocks · 11/07/2015 17:44

Didn't think random petitions were allowed here?

Anyway- Foxes are the equivalent of vermin. They are not cute Beatrix Potter animals.

I laugh at the hypocrisy of people who get worked up about foxes yet are happy to eat chicken ,probably on a daily basis, reared in appalling conditions, and the same for pork from pigs kept in concrete stalls. If you want to do something about animal welfare, start with those.

Fox hunting is an easy target as it's more about class differences than the animals.

icclemunchy · 11/07/2015 17:55

I always love the antis lack of understanding or even willingness to learn when it doesn't suit them.

So many times I hear about "dressing up the chase a fox" actually only the huntsman and his staff would be "chasing" anything it's them who provides the pest control aspect of Hunting.

The rest of the field pay to go along for the ride. For the thrill of riding in places usually barred to them. To not know where they will be going next. Yes they "dress up" as a mark of respect to the huntsman.

Bit like a wedding if you will. After all it's only the couple and witnesses that matter. The rest of us just dress up and go along for the ride.

Fox hunting is also as much about deterrence as killing the fox. Foxes really arnt stupid, they don't hang around in places where they know they will be hunted. Thus protecting all the livestock in the area

icclemunchy · 11/07/2015 17:58

And for those that suggest the field might just ride somewhere else. Where exactly? More and more bridleways are being covered in Tarmac to make them accessible to all. Farmers who used to allow us to ride around set asides now loose EU funding for doing so, and every other car tries to run you off the road! Or should no one be able to ride because it's "middle class"?
