Allowing people to buy their own home seems like a lovely idea in theory, but it's led to the shortage of affordable housing we face today. Many former council properties are now owned by buy-to-let landlords renting them to the very tenants who should be benefiting from social housing. Not only that but many of the people who bought their own homes at knock-down prices in the 80's have been unable to afford to maintain them properly so they're now elderly and terrified of the day the roof starts leaking. Take a drive round your local 'council estate' and the houses with peeling paint and damp patches are probably the ones in private hands.
