Many many mums suffer with pain and distress and ultimately discontinue breastfeeding and many babies are unable to feed properly, lose weight and suffer distress because tongue tie is not routinely screened for at birth. Correcting a tongue tie is a very simple 30 second procedure that should be offered routinely at birth if necessary. My son was not diagnosed until 8 weeks and I had to take him to 4 healthcare professionals and ultimately out of borough to get him diagnosed. Within 2 days of the corrective procedure he was feeding properly and gaining weight again. Although I was in constant pain and my baby lost weight my experience is ultimately one of the better ones as we were able to continue breastfeeding, many mums can't and if they wanted to suffer the stress and guilt associated with having to stop.

Signed. No idea why tongue tie is not checked and corrected when necessary as standard procedure.

DD2 was screened for tongue tie as a newborn and pronounced fine.

After 8 months of feeding problems, TT was diagnosed and snipped privately.

Screening alone is not enough if HCPs are not trained to recognise TT- one GP even told me that she could not have TT as she was bottle fed Confused

So yes to screening, but only in conjunction with a training programme.
